Two Things (with additional Bonus Things)

Dear Internetsters,

I would like to draw your attention to two things that are good. Both things are real things, not internet things, but I'm sure you'll enjoy them nonetheless.

The first thing is Hoodwinked, which is a lovely retelling of Red Riding Hood as a whodunnit from multiple points of view. The animation is a little lazy in places, particularly the lead character (and please, if you are going to have a close-up shot of some treadplate floor, make sure it's actually textured as treadplate and not just painted that way), but there were some lovely characters and dialogue. My favourites were Goat and Police Frog (not their real names). POLICE. FROG. Emma and I had this vision months ago and it was sheer joy to see him realised on the big screen (albeit sans tricycle).

The other thing that is good is The Flying Burrito Brothers, which is a restaurant and tequileria down the road from my work on Armagh Street. Having walked past it every day during most of its construction and fitting-out, I had eagerly awaited the day when I would be able to sample its wares, and they did not disappoint. The staff were courteous and accommodating (even after having a 120-person booking in the restaurant for most of the evening and therefore having to cope with a large number of disgruntled patrons), the service prompt but unobtrusive, the atmosphere delightful, the food heavenly (and pleasingly economical), and the margaritas amazing. Best of all, in two weeks' time it will be within walking distance of my house. OH. MYGOD. CHURROS.

While I am presenting my opinions on Things, please allow me to venture the opinion that kphoebe is among maybe the top five most awesome women on the planet at any given time, and has almost certainly been so for the better part of quarter of a century. I am delighted to be (I assume), the first person to wish her a very happy 25th birthday from here in the not-so-distant future.

Oh! Also awesome! ACTUAL. PAPER. CORRESPONDENCE. I was unsure why I would be getting a hand-addressed letter on the stationery of a firm in Auckland, but when opened the letter and turned to the final page to see mipol's name, well, I felt pretty special.

Now I must sleep. I am driving a carload of people to Waitohi tomorrow, and I must needs get up early so to do.

There are many other awesome things out there in this big awesome world, but I don't want to overload your minds. If you're feeling like you could use some more awesome in your life, I humbly suggest you get off the goddamn internet already and go outside.

If you would like to provide your opinions on things, please feel free to do so. I would ask, however, that the employment of mathematics in this endeavour be kept to a minimum.

spotlight on awesome
