So tonight I went to a Soul Calibur 2 / Tekken Tag Tournament / Marvel vs Capcom 2 tournament at Scandia. The format was really weird. You and the opponent you were paired with had to decide on which of the three games you wanted to play. In the case that your choice differs you play the game that neither chose. They stopped that later and used a coin toss for who would choose the game.
Round 1: I faced a guy named Danny and we both decided on SC2. He played Nightmare and I made quick work of that round. 1-0
Round 2: I played a guy from AR, but I can't remember his name. Again we both agreed on SC2. He played Taki and I took him down for a second victory. 2-0
Round 3: I was pared up with a guy who goes by Spike in the games he plays. He wanted to play Marvel vs Capcom 2 and I wanted Soul Calibur 2, but the tournament coordinator had me choose my game first. You can see the problem with the system because the person who picks seconds gets to decide the game. (Ex: I choose SC2 so he choosed Tekken. We didn't agree so we play MvC2). I found out during that match that the left side of MvC2 has a disfunctional fierce punch. I lost bad. 2-1
Round 4: I get pared up with a guy who goes by Guts in SC2. He's from ARC and we both choose SC2. I didn't play that hard against him. He played Nightmare and I was just trying to guard impact as much as I could. I almost lost when the round was my 1 win and his 2. I got serious and beat him for the 3 wins and another victory. 3-1
Round 5: I get pared up with a guy...I think his name was Ray. He's really good at MvC2, so I really don't want to lose the coin flip (by this time it had changed to coin flips.) I win the flip and choose to play SC2. He chooses Kilik and I play Astaroth instead of my usual main, Mitsurugi. I take care of that round quick although if he had won the toss it would have probably been different. 4-1
Round 6: I play Spike again in the finals. The tournament was double elimination so I had a second chance to work my way back up. Coin flip...he wins and we play MvC2 again. This time though...I called the right side. He and his friends were pretty sure of his ability to beat me regardless of his messed up fierce punch, but I quickly prove them all to be mistaken. He uses Cammy(good choice when relying on kicks), Guile(ok choice for mostly kicks, and Iron Man(way bad idea no clue what he was thinking). I choose Juggernaut, Iron Man, and Akuma. I took down his team without losing a single member of mine. 5-1 and I win the tournament!
So I won the tournament and I feel pretty good. It was a $5 entry and I won two all day wristbands which I can trade in for $15 in tokens each and an additional $10 in tokens. So I pretty much made $35. Afterward Eric and I went to Fireside and a bunch of friends showed up. We played DDR and hung out until leaving back for home. Today was just an overall wonderful day. I hope they have more tournaments at Scandia now that this was was fairly successful. Hopefully they do it better though. I wanted to enter a straight SC2 tournament, so hopefully they split it into different tournaments next time. Anyway...AWESOME DAY!
