...I got a new camera yesterday!

It's a Canon 5D mark II with the kit lens. It's my first camera body update since getting a digital SLR back in 2003 - spent a fair penny on nice glass (lenses) in the meantime, so I've got a decent lineup now ( Read more... )

...I say 'kit lens', but in this particular case a 'kit lens' is 24-105mm F/4 L (for 'Luxury', I believe, Canon's professional line of lenses) with image stabilisation and a nice, fast, quiet USM focus motor. Basically, all my zooms are now Canon L; 17-40 f/4, 24-105 F/4 IS, 70-200 F/2.8 IS. The 17-40 is crazy wide on a full frame, loads of fun!

I could've upgraded to a 24-70 2.8 for a few hundred more, but the DoF on a full frame even at F4 is already decent, I don't really do action/sports photography in low light, and I'd rather have 200 grams less weight and a bit more reach (and a lot less money) on a standard lens. Balances very nicely, and the controls are a real joy to use. And not just because I no longer have to wait 3 seconds before I can take a picture! I've got a 50mm f/1.8 and a 105mm f/2.8 macro if I really need the low light capacity, and I may get an 85mm f/1.8 at some point in the future if a nice second hand one comes around. I do quite like primes.

Congrats on the K20D buy! I do really quite like Pentax's DSLRs in terms of feel and usability - but I've invested in the Canon glass, so I'll just stick with it :-)
