Time to Speak Up

There's a great editorial about the recent Supreme Court decision which severely limits workers ability to file suits alleging gender discrimination. The law says that you have to file within 180 days of the discriminatory act, this has traditionally meant that every time someone gets underpaid, they have 180 days to file suit. The Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that this only applies to the first act, and thus if you don't figure out that you're being underpaid within 6 months of your first paycheck, then you are SOL for the rest of your career at the company. There's a bill in congress attempting to overturn the decision, but it recently failed to make progress. I'd urge you to read the Slate editorial at http://www.slate.com/id/2189983/ and, if you are so minded, contact your Senator to encourage supporting the measure by going to https://secure2.convio.net/nwlc/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=191 .
