Rented some movies

I rented some movies over the weekend.... actually, yesterday. Constantine was sold out (damn it), so I got Million Dollar Baby, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I-Robot. I'd only seen I-Robot before, and not the other two. I loved Robot the first time around. The voice of Isaac Assimov is clearly heard throughout the film. Why did it ( Read more... )

We've been over this before. Nothing in criminology is a matter of deterrence because criminals are irrational and commit crime never expecting to get caught. Banks are still robbed despite the abundance of cameras and extremely low success rate.

I have no official position on the death penalty but I shed no tears over the executions of rapists and murderers. We seem to have quite a bit of them in Florida. I'm more outraged over the lax treatment many in the judicial system are getting (notice how almost every child rapist/murderer was on parole or probation before gutting the 12-year-old-girl) than that of those sentenced to die.

And it's no surprise we kill murderers when we also kill fully developed babies partial-birth style. But that won't be a problem much longer when Justice Stevens goes. He'll be 89 before President Bush leaves office and might give him the opportunity to appoint a 3rd most-excellent justice.

Of course, you can't feel sorry for murderers like those you just mentioned. Can't feel sorry at all for them. So why do we execute them?

We know deterrence doesn't work, and that incapacitation happens regardless of life sentence or death sentence (or at least, it should). So, is retribution a good enough justification for execution?

Here's a thought: in classes, we've been taught that one of the reasons laws are written is to outline a nation's morals. Basically, we don't approve of murder. We don't approve of stealing. So if we don't approve of murder, then why do we execute murderers? Wouldn't we be the pot calling the kettle black?

If you're going to call pro-choice advocates murderers, then don't do it on my livejournal.

I never called pro-choice advocates murderers. I just said I'm not surprised we kill convicts when we also kill partially born children in the third trimester.

But perhaps it would be best if this was my last comment on your lj.

"But hey, I liked "Chronicles of Riddick." Is my opinion one you can trust?

My response to Million Dollar Baby: "meh." "

In that case, no. Million Dollar Baby was awesome and I-Robot was ok not the best... and Chronicles of Riddick...I didn't even waste my money on..so i will agree to disagree with you on that..well all of that...
So I guess we have completely opposite ideas of what makes a movie good
