I haven't posted in almost a month.
I've started volunteering at the Goodwill Computer Museum and Austin History Center.
The Computer Museum is a room full of vintage computers and video game systems that cries out for organization and reeks of potential. With a little bit of money and a clear mission the place could be interesting, useful, popular and awesome. To procure said funds I have begun researching grants and rewording/writing a letter of intent. This is all virgin territory for me, but is directly within the field I wish to work and thus is stellar experience. I only hope I can help something get accomplished. Big bonus/potential big distraction: playing all sorts of dag old video games.
The Austin History Center focuses entirely on historical documents, records, and media related to Austin and its history. It is deceptively large and loaded to the brim with all sorts of ephemera. I've been accessioning (ohh vocab) donations for both the general and photo archives. This basically means I'm sorting through donations that individuals and organizations have made to the Center, entering them into a database and rehousing them if necessary, then storing them away where they will wait god knows how long for appraisal. It can be challenging trying to wring a sentence long description out of folders filled with items spanning multiple decades, formats, and subjects. The work does allow for quick glances into other lives and periods of time, which is the part I love, and occasionally leads to hilarity/bizarrety: one donation included two books, "Lone Stars of David: Jews in Texas" and "There's a Yak in my Bed!"; conversely, a photo description from the Austin American Statesman circa 1959 read "mother, daughter give birth to baby girls within one hour". agugh?
I will, hopefully, be flying to Chicago tomorrow. It will be raining the entire time I am there, which probably means I will be raining booze down my throat, preferably with friends I have not seen in awhile. excited!
