i am succeeding quite well at being a dirtbag. for the third time this week i hit up the record stores in providence, peddling my wares, vinyl and cd's i no longer want. first stop, because they close earlier, in your ear. dennis was working, which  was a good thing; he generally hooks me up pretty good. his band, the deterrents had played ralphs in worcester the night before; felt bad i missed the gig, but since the pulltabs and boss fuel, i haven't really dug any of his bands.... he said chris wasn't really buying used stuff any more and giving cash, but he made an exception; i sold steve earle's first album 'guitar town' (the title track is the only decent song), 'brewing up with billy bragg', (quite rare!) and an ultra rare in the states, krewmen 'return of the living dead', a great, obscure psychobilly release on white vinyl! for all this? six fifty.... ouch, that sucks..., well, that gets me in to the mahi mahi show at least. i do hope dennis took that krewmen for himself or jason kendall....

off to newbury comics, in the mall. i feel particulary sucessful as a dirtbag, going to the mall with a stack of cd's and selling them... to get your parking validated, you're supposed to spend ten bucks, i sold cd's, got ten bucks and... (oh, i was parked illegally)... but usually, i have them validate my parking, and my trip is free!... take that you fascists of the Providence junta! sold: servotron, 'no time for humans', dinosaur juniour's 1987 album on SST, a trillion barnacle lapse's only release, some other weirdness that i can't recall already. funny story: while at in your ear, trying to sell music, the lead singer of  'a trillion barnacle lapse' was standing right next to me. i thought of being obnoxious, and pointing to the fact that i was selling his former bands cd, but i opted not too. i felt bad for him. i heard he's an alcoholic. so i told the singer from that band 'daughters' this story at newbury comics, and he thought it was pretty funny.  what makes the whole thing even funnier, is that last week, i sold the 'daughters' new cd back to newbury comics! daughters and a trillion barnacle lapse, both extremely good live; the former sucks recorded, the latter is quite good, and i'll probably regret selling it.

so, with money in my pocket (i found four bucks too!) i cruised down to AS220,  had a few czech rebels.... the country teasers were playing too; they're from scotland. all the hipsters in town showed up.. i sat in the corner and watched them roll in... the opening band ' the digs' were fronted by the guy from acme video! ed's buddy bruce was there. he's a weird dude, i don't really get him; before he knew i was there,  i caught him staring at the country teasers panty's for sale at the merch table, for a bit too long! but he bought me a beer, so i say no more...  the dig's were okay. i was in love with the female drummer; ..... they sounded like the 'honeymoon killers', with less snarl...

'the country teasers' were next. they had no 'country' in their sound, their musical skills seemed very lacking, and they were'nt as bad- ass as their press release made them seem. they were kicked off crypt records? (and fat possum?) probably because they suck/ sound like crypt bands of old, that were much better. like a 'chrome cranks' without the blues and insanity... wow, i love the chrome cranks! country teasers? boring...

i spoke with the merch girl briefly, inquiring about the bands' scottish heritage.

"oh, they just met in art school, they have'nt played scotland in years.." she said.

ah....like the 'dog faced hermans', and 'the rezillos'... " i replied... (do not try this at home, this stunt requires the skilled expertise of an extreme music nerd.)

she perked up a bit at this... "wow, right on! i have'nt heard those names in years! yeah!"

mahi mahi.... yikes-good! danceable like the newer 'faint' material, with less instrumentation and vocals... the singer i've seen around forever, but can't place where... and he has the exact, white motorcycle jacket i've craved for years! i wish i'd invited pretty girls with me to this band.... hmmmm... next time...

....and i called seattle laurie afterward...finally! i couldn't hear anything because my ears were ringing; she got my three cd compilation, with ridiculously extensive liner notes, and custom artwork. (i am extremely proud of that comp. it took me weeks to put together) she was properly overwhelmed, which i fully expected. don't recall what we spoke of, but i told her she'd better call back later...( she was out with friends and i couldn't hear with my ears ringing and with the road noise...) she did, but i only found out this morning... i'd fallen asleep... tonight maybe?
