worked in pennsylvania... yesterday? ...two days ago? ....three? i had to re-bury our non metallic EMT conduit before they pour a concrete floor; it wasn't deep enough apparently. i'd checked it out the day before and it was to spec on the blueprint, but the next morning the superintendent for the entire strip mall (who's authority supercedes my superintendent) decided he wanted it buried deeper. well.... the ground froze overnight.... idiot!.... so a Labor Ready crew was hired for me, and we re-dug everything, hacking away at frozen ground with pickaxes.
I feel strange being in charge of Labor Ready crews. i don't really feel above them, and so i generally end up working beside them, sharing in their joking and sad camraderey of sorts. if they didn't show up, i'd be digging these trenches, getting paid 28.50 per hour. it would take me all day. they get 7.50.
it's always the same mix too; a couple of young black guys, who are trying to help make some money for their families, a nerdy college student, who hasn't ever done labor before, an old drunk, possibly homeless, looking for booze money. i feel like they work better when i work alongside them; i thanked the two black guys for helping me out a few times, i had the college kid take measurements with me, cuz i could see the work was killing him, i listened to the old drunks ideas on how the job could go better, expressed my interest in drinkin' a 40. oz too...
i am above no job, as long as it's not service related, dealing with people... the 28.50? that's for them to hire my brain too... sometimes though, id rather get ten bucks an hour, and have my thoughts to myself...
