Tales from the Table: Brisbane Knights, part 2
THE VANGUARD
Unlike past Halloween games, in which players either were a rag tag group of solo characters (like in the 1942 LA game), or a team put together for a purpose by a third party (like the Ultras from last years Halloween game), the Vanguard is the classic "Solo Heroes who have formed a team to taken on threats to big for any one hero to face" model. The Avengers or Justice League model if you will.
The Vanguard originally came together a handful of years ago, when an alien species known as The Parallax (Empire) attempted to invade the Earth & tried to use Melbourne as a staging ground.
Now the Parallax aren't in this story, but they are interesting, so i'll give you a quick run down. The Parallax are one of the human off shoot species, that look almost entirely human, at least on the outside, with some differences internally. Any way,they possess a space empire unlike any other in the universe.
Unlike the average space empire which is made up of a cluster of planets & resources, the Parallax have a singularly unique way of building an empire, via Event Horizon Stargates. They find hospitable planets with unmanned probe ships, determine their suitability using a couple of factors including being occupied by other intelligent humanoid races, having a lower level of technology, not having space farring tech, not having made official contact with other alien species, far enough away from other galactic hubs as to be considered a galactic backwater & if it has those traits, the probe lands, deploys a star gate & then opens up an event horizon, so the Parallax can come through, build a staging ground quickly conquer & pacify the planet, control everything around it & then move on to the next suitable planet, using this one for resources, sending everything through the gateways.
The end result is an empire, a space Rome if you will, where all roads lead to Rome & so do the resources.
Well the Parallax tried that one Earth, trying to use Melborne as a beach head for their invasion force, only to be stopped in their tracks by a collection of at the time unaffiliated new heroes who became known as The Vanguard.
