I flipped over to the
All Star Game at about the 8th inning last night. I had a hard time leaving the game because the National League still had a chance to win. I finally gave up in the 13th inning. I stayed up way too late last night watching the extra innings.
Watching the final All Star Game to be played at the current incarnation of Yankees Stadium made me want to visit the venue. With them tearing it down soon, it's almost guaranteed that I won't ever go there - unless someone wants to buy me a plane ticket and put me up in a hotel room so I can go there. If that's the case...let's talk. ;-)
Although I'll never go to the House that Ruth Built, I'm pretty fortunate to have been able to visit several different ballparks, some of which are no longer in existence. Here are the games I've been to:
- Fenway Park: Red Sox vs. Twins (sometime in the late '80s). The big things I remember about this game was the guys sitting behind us accidentally spilling beer on my back, and another guy in crowd yelling at our section because we weren't actively participating in the "Tastes Great...Less Filling" debate/cheer.
- The Old Busch Stadium: Cardinals vs. Padres (late '80s). Went with my brother's Little League team.
- Kaufman Stadium: Royals vs. Yankees (early '90s). Sat along the first baseline, hoping to see Don Mattingly play.
- Three Rivers Stadium: Pirates vs. ?? (Kevin thinks it was the Phillies) ('90). Sat in a suite, got the VIP treatment and watched the Killer B's (Bonds, Bonilla, and...Bell?). The whole experience turned me into a Pirates fan. It didn't hurt that they were really good.
- Cinergy Field: Reds vs. Indians ('98). Saw the inaugural interleague rivalry game. I still have the commemorative pin somewhere and I was pretty close to grabbing a home run ball. I also went to a game during the Reds' last season there. Maybe you'll remember the game. It's the one where Ken Griffey, Jr. got hurt. Because...you know...he never got hurt. Ever.
I'd love to go to:
- Petco Park. Because, well, that would mean we were in San Diego again and that place is amazing!
- The new Busch Stadium - Go Cardinals!
- I hear Coors Field and Camden Yards are pretty cool, too.
I don't think any of them are going away anytime soon, though.
