Trojan condom commercial.

Today on A&E I saw a commercial that said 1 in 4 people with HIV don't tell their partner that they have it because they don't know they do - then the commercial went on to plug Trojan, and showed a man kissing a woman ( Read more... )

Good point!! And to be honest, I hadn't thought that the guy might be bi, so I thank you for pointing out something that I missed. I consider myself very analytical but I sometimes miss things. Less often than not, but that possibility did not cross my mind.

Still, ignoring all the facts I've presented both in this post and my other one on HIV, look at this commercial as social commentary - no commercial would ever show two men in the commercial. I think that says something about the nature of our society, and it is a form of homophobia in my opinion. If homosexuals were on equal ground as heterosexuals, they could risk being "degraded" in a commercial like this (even though that would not be what is happening). In reality, the overly sensitive society we live in could not take it - well the 5% of wusses who would whine and gripe and write petitions about it anyway. I do think most could probably handle it, but the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Also, on the topic of my not always thinking about some things from every possible angle: regarding the long term moderate steroid using athletes, they showed no increased incidence of any disease whatsoever or decrease in lifespan - but what I had failed to realize was that athletes should live longer on the average, so you could argue that the moderate use of performance enhancing drugs decreases health and organ integrity to the degree in which natural athletic performance enhances it.

Europe shows commercials with homosexuals.
Also about HIV.

It's not because you live in a retarded place (Ontario) that this goes for the rest of the world.

Europe seems to be more intelligent and less criminal than North America, in general. It might be religiously oriented but I'm not sure.

It is not religious. As catholics we look at the USA and this WHAT THE FUCK. The Christian Fundamentalists in America don't even have a clue what christian faith is about.

The reason is that Europe is by far more liberal than the United States. For Europeans, liberal politics are RIGHT WINGED politics. On the left side from liberalism, we have christian democrats, socialists, greens, and even commies! For the ideas promoted by your republicans, we have to look at ultra-nationalist right-extremist parties. May I point out that the Belgian Christian Democrats approved gay marriage, because the christian faith believes in the family as a tool to keep society together, and a married gay is far more valuable to society, than a promiscuous one spreading HIV. All in all, the Catholic faith is an extremely liberal religion promoting individual freedom and responsability. The Cathollic faith puts faith in the human individual.

I don't think there's a fundamental difference between Europe and the USA in terms of political and religious views. I think if you compare New York to London, San Fransisco to Zürich, Washington to Brusssels, view will be vastly similar. However the USA is 1 big federation, and the dumb majority wins. On the other hand Europe is not even a confederation, and each member does its own thing, so small urban areas like Belgium, Holland, Switzerland can take the lead in gay marriages, marihuana laws, stem cell research... and as their economies outperform the other bigger states, the others start liking these ideas and copy them.

If states like California or New York were independent from the USA, things would be more similar to Europe I think.
