Two years ago...

More than two years ago I rode my bike from my parent's house to Lakeview Park in Oshawa. I was killing time for a couple of weeks before I would leave to work at the Chateau Lake Louise. I was feeling very epic.

I sat on some rocks skipping stones and contemplating the infinite when I notice some litter on the ground. It was an empty and sealed plastic Dr. Pepper bottle and it was being washed up against the rocks. I walked towards it and thought for a moment "what if there was a note in there?". That would be cool right?

There was no note. Of course there was no note. Why would there be?

So I wrote a note. I put a couple of rocks in the bottom of the bottle so I could throw it further and I heaved it into the Lake.

Today I received a message on Facebook:

Hello Matt!
On 05/06/05 I believe you put a message in a Dr. Pepper bottle at Lakeview Park in Oshawa. I have been carrying it in my wallet for 2 years now. I intended to write you a letter, however after time your message became part of my wallet and I would forget for awhile about it,until someone would bring up 'message in a bottle' and I would pull it out. Well today that happened. So I thought to myself, with this huge facebook craze, maybe you were on here. So, if it was you that wrote the letter and was wondering what ever happened to it...I have it. If it wasn't you, then please disregard my message and carry on as you were! HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
Bec.

And the original note:

05/06/05
Now listen, this isn't some
kid's idea of something
profound. I just found this
Dr. Pepper bottle on the
shore at Lake View Park
in Oshawa and I thought
I'd write a letter to
who ever finds it next.
I thought about
writing a fake letter
and saying that I was
writing from Detroit or
something, but this might
be more interesting.
I'm going to throw
this letter, in the bottle,
into the Lake when I
finish writing it but
I don't expect it to go
very far. If you find
this in Montreal I'll be
very delighted, but I doubt
that'll happen.
Instead, what I'm
hoping is for some person (turn page over...)
someone like me, to
wander down to the
shore, see the Dr. P(then you scribbled out the P)
Pepper bottle as I did,
think to themselves, as I
did, "Wouldn't it be cool
if there was a
message in those" then
pick it up and BEHOLD!
A letter. from me to
you.
So here's hoping you
find it. And I hope
you're doing well. I'm
fine.

And then I signed it with my name and my parent's address, which was probably kind of reckless. But I really wanted to get a letter in the mail. This is just as good. Even better considering the time that has lapsed.

Apparently though, Rebecca, the woman who found the note, did not see any Dr. Pepper bottle anywhere near by. This is very puzzling to me. Or maybe it shouldn't be so puzzling. Someone saw the bottle, saw there was a note inside, read the note, didn't give a shit and tossed it on the ground. Typical Oshawa I guess. But Rebecca ain't typical! I'm very excited. Now I want to throw all kinds of things into the Lake in hopes of getting a response.

Who's with me?!
