these skis were made for walkin'

Today Mom, Dad, and I performed a little "experiment": rather than getting in the car and going up to our ski locker at Moonlight Lodge, we decided to try skiing pretty much straight out the door of our house. New trails and lifts have been put in which supposedly give our neighborhood direct ski access. Sadly, the experiment was not a success, ( Read more... )

Master and Commander is the single most accurate piece of 19th century naval warfare ever committed to film. I say this as an English 19th century naval historian. ;)

Any other good films you would recommend for accuracy?

Not for naval combat. But 'The Duelists' (Harvey Keitel, et al) probably has the most realistic 19thC sword fights.

Skiing! Every time someone mentions skiing, I think, "That sounds exciting! I should try that!" ...and then I remember the four or five times I have tried it only to fall painfully, get cold and wet, and hide in the nearest lodge for the rest of the day with some hot cocoa. Even so, it would be so cool to be able to just ski out of your house and it's too bad that's not working!

Please forgive my usual "formal education is the best thing ever" automatic knee-jerk reaction, but... Did you ever take a lesson? Skiing, in my pretty-well-informed opinion, is *not* a sport one can really self-teach. Much of the body positioning and many of the joint motions needed to ski at all well are incredibly counter-intuitive.

An informal lesson from an experienced skiier can be pretty valuable (if it's someone you know well, it might be better than a formal lesson). My mother taught me most of my utility-skiing (how to get around on flat ground, how to climb hills, what different equipment pieces are, how to judge conditions).

The hill does sound annoying. Can you side-step in your skiis up it? It's a bitch, but it might still be easier than carrying 'em. I'd probably herring-bone my way up, but that needs poles.
