Today Mom, Dad, and I performed a little "experiment": rather than getting in the car and going up to our ski locker at Moonlight Lodge, we decided to try skiing pretty much straight out the door of our house. New trails and lifts have been put in which supposedly give our neighborhood direct ski access. Sadly, the experiment was not a success, except insofar as we learned something by performing it, namely that the ski access simply Does Not Work. The route down in the morning was not too bad, but it involved a lot of flat parts where you had to walk/ski on flat ground. Coming back in the afternoon was truly brutal: in addition to the tons and tons of walking, at the top of the last lift there is a 20' hill you have to hike up. While carrying your skis, but still wearing ski boots. Oh and it's at about a 50 degree incline (not exaggerating). If there hadn't been a helpful ski patroller there to lend me her poles* and take my skis for me, I would not have made it. Then at the top of the hill is another loooooong walk on flat ground; at that point I had Dad call Mom (who had gone in earlier) to come pick us up.
Apparently our lot here was sold to us under the pretext of being in a neighborhood that would have ski access. We were understanding of the fact that not everything was all put in yet, but now we're kind of upset. Dad wrote an angry letter to the concerned parties.
Tomorrow, back to Moonlight Lodge. Which is fine and good, but there is something appealing about skiing straight out the door without driving anywhere.
I also tested out some new skis today, but they didn't work for me. Tomorrow I will try out another pair or two.
In other news, I made contact with the math teacher
whose job I took over today. She and I will talk again soon, but so far it's looking good. She's not going to be ready to resume her whole schedule, but may take the senior classes more or less off my hands, which would be amazing.
In other other news, I watched Master and Commander tonight. Holy shit wow that is an amazing movie. Why did it take me so long to watch it?
*For those who don't know, I ski without poles, because my hands have a very weak grip, and this defect is only heightened by wearing two layers of gloves. This is also why I prefer fighting with two-handed weapons in boffer combat (see icon).
