So,
crystalpyramid and I were just talking about the (long-promised, probably-never-happening) Ender's Game movie on the bus, after a previous mention of Orson Scott Card at dinner. We were discussing how it would be really hard to actually do the book justice on the screen: not only would it be difficult if not impossible to film the child-on-child violence in a manner true to the spirit of the book, it would also (relatedly) be all too likely to wind up with some stupid Disneyfied homily about family and respecting authority, rather than actually remaining true to the rather terrifying view of adults in the book(*).
I made an offhand comment that the person who should direct it is Stanley Kubrick, too bad he's dead, hahaha. But then we realized... wait. That *is* actually how the EG movie should be. I mean, think about it. Imagine the trippy dream sequences when Ender plays the immersive computer game! Imagine the social commentary completely intact! Best of all, imagine Ender committing xenocide to the tranquil strains of "On the Beautiful Blue Danube"!
(*)I, along with the rest of nerddom, have similar concerns about The Golden Compass; still want to see it though.
