Early Jamestown: Early Jamestown was a completer failure. Forty colonists died on the voyage to the new colony, and once the colonists reached Jamestown, many died of starvation, disease and malnutrition.

John Smith: Saved Jamestown by taking over and initiating a “Thou who shall not work, shall not eat,” policy. Saved from execution by Pocahontas.

Native American Life: After the colonists came to America, the worst impact was the disease. Life was greatly disrupted by the colonists.

Maryland: Maryland was founded as a Catholic safe-haven by Lord Baltimore.

Puritan Conversion: This was their receipt of God’s free gift of saving grace. This was the Puritans turning to a life of holiness, and after their conversion they became visible saints.

Puritan Mission: The Puritan Mission was to completely remove all Catholic influences from the Church of England.

Roger Williams: Spoke out against the Puritan church then fled to Rhode Island to create a virtually prejudice-free colony.

Middle Colonies: Consisted of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Much more religious and ethnic toleration and it became an immediate success.

Population in Chesapeake: Up and down the whole time. Disease and unhealthy living patterns made the death rate high and the average life expectancy was forty-three.

Headright System: A system of importing laborers where the one who paid for the voyage (the master) would receive 50 acres of land per servant.

Origins of Slavery: African slaves had been in Jamestown as early as 1969. When rising wages in England discouraged people from wanting to go to work in the new world, so the plantation owners needed workers, the obvious answer was slavery.

Halfway Covenant: Said that people could be members of the church if they were the children of full converts.

Salem Witch Trials: Really showed how touchy religious and cultural issues had become.

Population and Change: The population in the colonies began to grow. Lower death rate, immigration, higher birth rate, and better nutrition all contributed to the increase. The colonies average age was becoming substantially younger.

Sources of Population Growth: Immigration, more babies born and living, and lower death rate.

1st Great Awakening: Revival of religious emotion, also increased emphasis on human sin and how corrupt we are.
