When Matt Giraud takes the “American Idol” stage for the first time since placing fifth last season, he won’t have votes or Simon Cowell to worry about.
On Thursday, he and eighth-place finisher Scott MacIntyre will reprise their dueling piano performance of Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It,” which brought audiences in arenas across the country to their feet during “Idol’s” live summer tour.
“I’m pumped to hit the ‘Idol’ stage again,” said Giraud, of Kalamazoo. “And I’m honored to be asked.”
Just a few weeks ago,
Giraud wowed a sold-out crowd at Forest Hills Fine Arts Center with his old-school-meets-new-school vibe and jazzy showmanship, proving to a hometown crowd that, as judge Randy Jackson would say, the dude’s got mad skills.
Giraud dropped his first single, “You Don’t Know Me,” the same day as the Jan. 29 show. The tune, a duet with jazz singer Anna Wilson, debuted at No. 1 on iTunes Jazz.
So what possibly could top a sold-out crowd and a No. 1 song? How about hawking a classic cookie?
Giraud is plugging Oreos, singing a stellar anti-dunking jingle at
facebook.com/Oreo (pal and fellow Season 8 finalist Anoop Desai sings a pro-dunking jingle). Fans can vote for their favorite jingle, and make videos of themselves and their friends and family performing either Giraud or Desai’s jingle; the winner gets to meet both singers.
Giraud and MacIntyre, who releases his first single Thursday, will perform on Thursday’s 8 p.m. results show, when two guys and two girls will be eliminated from the Top 16. Watch for Lacey Brown, Didi Benami, Tim Urban and Todrick Hall to hit the skids, while fan - and judge - favorites Crystal Bowersox and “Big Mike” Lynche sail on to the Top 12 and beyond.
Giraud is keeping tight with his season’s competitors, plus he already has met some of the new crop of crooners.
“I ran into some of the ‘Idol’ contestants at the mall in L.A., and they’re really excited to have me and Scott back on the show, so that will help with the nerves - and the fact that there’s no judgment,” Giraud said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
He returns to West Michigan on April 21 to perform during the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo.
“That’s an even bigger honor than doing ‘Idol,’” he said.
