Harvard Grads in English give me feedback! Or anyone really...

Architecture is a precious marker of time and culture, which is why preservation of our built and natural environments is paramount in a design education. The maintaining of our current and past as well as our future architecture paves the way for further understanding of our culture and the cultures that preceded us.

Earlier investigations in design from grade school in Switzerland and Florida all the way through first through third year of college in Alaska and Oregon have lead me towards a more precise awareness of architecture, and its context in our society. Architecture engages its audience through the use of poetic gestures established in built form as to be experienced by the user, giving a wide array of experiences and impressions. I have learned architecture cannot be an arbitrary gesture especially when considering a specific context. Architecture or design for that matter must meet programmatic needs while also maintaining highly detailed aesthetics.

As the foremost school of design in the country Rhode Island School of Design offers a philosophy and an environment in which natural talent can be fostered and expanded. The school offers the opportunity for Architectural fulfillment as well as the opportunity to explore other areas of design. Being able to represent concepts and ideas through the use of many different mediums is a trade crucial in today’s designed world, and pertinent for my growth in arts and design.

Rhode Island school of Design offers the facilities necessary to immerge myself completely in all my areas of interest whether it be glass, ceramics, furniture, textiles, industrial design, fashion design, or architecture. The school affords knowledgeable professors and visiting alumni to aide me in all of my explorations throughout my educational career. The state of Rhode Island itself is an excellent laboratory for anyone in the design community, given its rich location in the northeast, a region of great cultural and historical prominence.

Reviewing the past three years of my college education, I believe my engagement between other students and professors can be met with the low student to teacher ratio offered in Rhode Island School of Designs programs of study. Upon evaluating the intensity of the architecture program here at Portland State University, I believe continuing my education at Rhode Island School of Design would give me the structure and the rigor to fulfill my expectations.

Given the opportunity to attend at Rhode Island School of Design, I hope to perfect my communication skills in design and the arts. I would greatly value the opportunity to study at RISD and I know I would receive a rigorous, well-rounded education. I look forward to hearing from you and I thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Matthias Scott Slavens
