Without exception, Vala always got bored during the middle of a movie. She always wanted to know what would happen at the end. Once she learned how to work the DVD player, she would often skip a few chapters just to get to the final act. She wasn’t interested in how the characters got to the end they wanted, only that they did actually get there. Daniel realized early on that taking her to the movie theater was just a waste of good money. Not even a sex scene held her attention. She only cared about sex when she was involved.

Patience wasn’t a strong characteristic of hers. When it came to dinner, she wanted to go straight from the appetizer to the chocolate cake. She was a woman who knew what she wanted. She didn’t like to waste time either. Once their relationship took a more intimate turn, they didn’t often make it to the bed. Instead, before Daniel could sometimes catch his breath, they were up against a wall in either set of base quarters.

It wasn’t a huge surprise, therefore, that Vala didn’t like research. She couldn’t understand why the final chapter of a book was often worthless unless you had read the other pages. When it came to journals, she preferred to search out the summary or abstract. Even a fact-finding mission could be a bore for her, unless there was a quick resolution and discovery of what they were searching for.

She and Daniel were the complete antithesis of each other. Friends wondered what they saw in each other. For Daniel, it was all about the journey, while Vala was interested in what she could get out of that journey.

Daniel took a great delight in watching Vala accomplish something. She fought hard for what she wanted, as he had discovered when he first encountered her on board the Prometheus. It didn’t matter whether it was a spot on SG-1, or a win during a basketball game. When she got what she wanted, her face lit up like a small child’s at Christmas. When he finally gave himself to her, after months of her pursuing him, it was a pleasure for him in more ways than one.

Most people in the SGC knew that Vala could usually be found in Daniel’s office. At first, it had been a matter of life or death for her to be there. She’d brought it upon herself, the moment she’d slapped that damn bracelet on his wrist. He had free reign of the base, and the knowledge to match it. Therefore, he’d dictated where they would or wouldn’t go. More often than not, he’d chosen his office and Vala had no choice but to remain there with him.

After the first time the Ori attempted an invasion of their galaxy, Vala decided to make Earth her home. General Landry hadn’t been thrilled, but she’d proven herself time and time over. She’d even forced herself to join Daniel in his reading of “boring” texts. If he had a stack of reading material in front of him, she’d split the pile and halve his work.

But she still loathed the process, always wanting to shoot straight for the ultimate prize. She still looked at the dessert menu first, read the final page of a novel before the opening one, and skipped DVD chapters in movies. So when Daniel decided to make their relationship a permanent thing, he knew she wouldn't want a long engagement. Therefore, he decided to make some plans and hope she’d give him the right answer.

Finally came the moment when he was able to hold the box out to her.

"What's that?" She eyed him warily. No doubt she thought it was another artifact, not that she'd be completely wrong.

He flipped open the lid. "Let's get married."

He was sure the squeal could be heard in the Gate room. She then jumped into his arms, causing the ring box to almost go flying from his grasp. Vala made the save and pulled out the ring before moving away and holding it aloft.

"Daniel it's beautiful. Is it a diamond? It looks like a diamond. Oh Daniel, darling, are you serious?"

He leaned back against his workbench, stuffed his hands in his BDU pockets and watched her slide the ring onto her finger. He'd thought about presenting it to her over a romantic dinner, but those never seemed to last the whole way through. It seemed their first date, when she'd been abducted before the appetizer, had set a pattern. On their second date, they'd been called to the SGC. And then there was her constant desire to skip the entree and move straight to dessert. Not that he protested, especially when she had a certain type of "dessert" in mind.

"Daniel?" She was holding up her hand to the bald strip light. "Can you hear me?"

"I hear you fine, Vala," he said with a smile. "Yes, it's a diamond. Yes, I'm serious."

She came back and looped her arms around his neck. "Daniel, thank you." She rewarded him with a passionate kiss, one that was enough to make him wonder what the security guys were making of the footage. No doubt the news of the proposal was already making the rounds. Any minute now, Cameron would be walking in and demanding that Daniel be taken to Doctor Lam for a complete check-up. After all, he'd have to be insane to propose marriage to Vala mal Duran.

"It's absolutely beautiful," she told him when they parted. Her eyes returned to the ring. "Where did you find it?"

"It was my mother's," he answered quietly. He'd kept it safe during all the years he'd spent moving from one foster home to the next, hoping one day to find someone who meant as much to him as Clare Ballard had meant to Melburn Jackson. It had been left on the base, with the rest of his meager belongings, when he'd gone on the first mission to Abydos. Therefore, Shau’re had never worn it. He was thankful that Catherine Langford had salvaged his possessions, hanging onto them even when she’d presumed he was dead.

Vala’s eyes glistened. “Oh, Daniel,” she murmured. “I don’t deserve this.”

He wiped away a tear with his finger. “You do,” he told her, as he pulled her close. “You deserve the best, Vala.”

She drew her head away from him. “Why, Daniel Jackson, are you saying you’re the best?” she asked with a leer.

He’d grown used to her innuendos. “You said I was last night.”

Vala traced an invisible pattern down the front of his tee shirt with her nail. “So, when did you plan for us to get married?”

“Three weeks from Saturday.”

Her eyes widened. “You have thought this through.”

“You’re not as mysterious as think,” Daniel replied. “You’d never survive a long engagement,” he pointed out. “You can’t even look at a comic book unless you know how it’s going to end.”

“Are you calling me impatient?”

“I’m calling you a woman who doesn’t waste time in going after what she wants. Something which,” Daniel added, “I noticed the first time we met.”

Vala’s finger continued to move enticingly up and down the black material of his top. “And you know what I want?” she asked, her voice husky and seductive.

“I think I do.”

“So what do I want?”

He pretended to think for a moment. “I think,” he whispered, leaning in close and nibbling at her ear, “you want to take the afternoon off, and get out of this place.”

“Do I want company?”

“I think you definitely want company, my company.”

She pulled back and headed towards the door. “So what are we waiting for? I’ve got my ring, and you’ve got me. What more do we want?”

He switched off his computer and followed her, only pausing long enough to turn out the light.
