One of two character sketches that came to mind for this prompt. I might write the other half based on Gormenghast, but we'll see what my brain can come up with. But! this was fun, writing in this particular fandom for the first time.
Prompt: Prince Charming
Pairing: Utena Tenjou/Anthy Himemiya
Word count: 235
Her newly betrothed was a girl, and no less than Utena Tenjou, the girl in her class who insisted on wearing a boy's uniform and who spoke of becoming a prince. Well, now she had a chance to fulfill that innocent dream.
But dreams have a habit of turning into not so innocent games, and in all the stories, the prince always ended up harmed somehow, in his heart or his mind or his body or his soul, as Anthy's own brother had, when he pushed himself too hard for the sake of the girls in the kingdom.
The question was, could Utena Tenjou bear this burden and this fate? She had stepped innocently and with noble intentions into the web of intrigue that Anthy had woven. Would she emerge with that nobility intact?
It had to be done. The story had to reach its climax before it could be resolved and come to the happily ever after for her brother. But Anthy could not deny the pang that pressed at her heart. Was she falling for Utena? Was the girl her true prince? Had the girl with the rose-crest ring come into her life to save Anthy from herself? Was she falling for her own pawn? This could skew how the story was supposed to run. But did it really matter, as long as her brother was made whole, and she was freed from being a witch?
