Computer woes

After five years it looks like my desktop has finally given up the ghost. The fucker is dead. Turned it on when I got home and the fans spin up but the machine itself doesn't even POST (all the funny stuff that happens before Windows starts). Nothing. MB appears to be completely dead, primary hard drive doesn't spin at all.

So, what to do. Well I'm going to try a few things. Going to run into work tomorrow and take my primary HD in with me and see if I can get it running on one of the older Dells that we have (GX270) since they are the only ones with IDE connectors on the Motherboards. If the thing boots then I'll see what I can do to make it work. If not...well...new computer time. Money that I really didn't want to spend. *grumble*

So I ask you friends, if you were to buy a new machine now, what would you get. 2K is the absolute highest that I will be willing to spend. I will need to be able to do video and audio editing (nothing major), anime watching, surfing, etc. I would really like to be able to play some games, but it isn't a major thing.

Right now I have a work laptop that is acting as my machine. I have it since I'm going to NY on Tuesday. Gotta babysit some sales folks. I gotta say that I am digging wireless. Totally loving it right now. Sitting, watching tv while I type this up is pretty damn awesome. :) Me likey.

One issue with laptops though is that they aren't nearly as powerful as desktops, and I've ALWAYS had desktops. Plus you can trouble shoot them and upgrade them as need be. You can't do that with a laptop. Reguardless of what I get, I'm probably going to have to run with Vista (shudder). I really don't want to but....gah. Okay so there are pros and cons to both. Need some real help here guys.
