This is awesome. I find the last line doesn't quite work for me, but the rest...the fact that Aeryn is hunting her down, the way Xhalax breaks down, unable to DO this...it's all excellent in the details and the tangible frustration and loss.

Thank you. :) Xhalax is not easy to write, but she's worth the effort. You know, that last line isn't optimal for me, either, because it's a cliche human saying, and doesn't feel natural for her. I wanted her to say something about family, though, having accepted that she is part of one, albeit on her own terms. And I wanted, "Aeryn, love," to resonate with how she's addressed Talyn in the past (in this AU). It might be improved by adding a short sentence. What do you think of this:

"Aeryn... Love." The word scrapes through Xhalax's mind, but it's exactly the one she wants. It's not enough. She latches onto something she's heard the Humans say, bizarre and yet somehow appropriate for the irrational decisions Xhalax has made, what her life is becoming. "That's what family is for."

That. THAT is what it needed!

Well done!

And thank you!

Thank you for the comment that spurred me to re-think! I like this much better, too. :)
