Fall Wrap Up

Oct 04, 2005 09:04

It's time to start bringing in the plants that I will attempt to winter over in the house. Today, I cleaned off the huge pot of pelargoniums (that's the common garden geranium, but it's not a true geranium. The true geraniums stay in the garden just fine. These ones are tender perennials that must come in or die for certain.) In a bit I'll bring in the pot of Christmas cactus, after I clean it off. It'll just come right in, like the pels. The impatiens, however, I'll have to bring in overnight, then put it back out during the day for a week or so to acclimatize it to the indoors, or it'll go into shock and die. And there's not enough left of it to do that.

I'll also bring in my erodiums that are in pots. The others are on their own, and hopefully they fare well, but I do have three in pots that I'll try to winter over in the house. They're another member of the gerenacia family, same as the geraniums and pelargoniums, only these are tiny. I've got a couple cultivars out there in the garden. They're not real good here, but I love them so much that I try every couple of years to get them to take. One of these days I'll find the cv that will thrive here.

The garden is beginning to look a bit bare. Just the russet of the sedums and a couple mauve mums left now. But the red-twig dogwood has started to color up nicely, and its leaves are dropping, so soon there'll be new colors, and new interest out there.
