So I'm just about finished with the 3 Gears of War novels and I'm pretty happy they decided to make it a quintology instead of a trilogy. Of course, it makes sense since the writer of the books, Karen Traviss, is also penning the third game. This obviously gives her the ability to continue to fill in pieces of the universe that the games don't let us see.
It was at this point I went into review mode before deciding that if you want to read the books, you will and that if you don't want to read them and you're curious, you could just ask me. :) Suffice to say I've really enjoyed all three, though third was a little lacking because it felt like nothing was finished (thus adding 2 more novels to the total, I suppose!) and the central character in it was more or less Victor Hoffman and while the author does a very good job of making him interesting, I'm far more interested in the trials of Delta Squad. Just so you know though, each book essentially covers two stories- one in the present and one in the past- and draws parallels between the two. It's definitely interesting to read about moments mentioned in game (such as the hammer strike that wiped out most of humanity and the battle at Aspho Fields) in more detail and it also lets the reader and gamer understand character motives a little more. Plus, it shows without a doubt that the big Space Marine Shooters can have intriguing characters and stories. It's not all run and gun or sit and shoot. Maybe I should read the Halo: Reach novel.
I assume the fourth Gears book, due to be released before Gears 3 is released, will fill in more of those in between details. In the third book, Locust are essentially non-present (though there's a new enemy) yet they're very present in GoW3 trailers and such. I'm assuming the fourth book will explain how that comes to pass. I'd guess the fifth one will be there to explain events post Gears 3, but that really depends on what happens in the game. Either way, I'm really looking forward to these Gears related things. :) Now I just have to decide if I want to go all-in and read the comic book as well. I have to find out if that's more additional story or if it's just a re-telling and go from there.
This is probably a good time to take a Gears break though, what with Dead Rising 2 arriving next week. And then there's DeathSpank to play. And I have 50 Cent: BotS from Gamefly (Shut up! I've heard it's surprisingly competent!). And I should probably at least rent the new Guitar Hero When it comes out to catch the early boosting parties. And Comic Jumper drops on October 6th. And maybe I'll finally try a Halo game in the form of Halo:Reach. Backlog!
