Hey all!
So of course I did that asinine "Writer's Block" thing and then thought "Oh shit, I had more to talk about!" Tch, typical.
Still putting off my Frederick Barbarossa paper, but I'm going to go and do some more work on it tonight. It's basically a 6-8 page biography with a thesis. I have a thesis, biographies this short are easy, and this length of writing is a joke to me after writing papers for Landes and Anderson. I fear it not! Freddie really cracks me up though. The man had a death wish--I'm convinced. He tried to swim across a deep, fast river... in probably 100 pounds of armor. Brilliant, amirite? Of course he drowned, and his soldiers spent (I'm guessing) ages fishing his body out. Worst part is this: I've heard it said that they wanted him buried in Jerusalem, so they tried to embalm his body with VINEGAR and see if it would last until they reached the Holy Land. Needless to say, it didn't work, so PARTS of Frederick are buried all along the trails to the Holy Land. I'll admit it, I picked this man for his comedic value.
I didn't really elaborate last night, but the movie I saw last night was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which is probably the oldest Miyazaki I've seen yet. I believe it's from 1984--this bitch is older than me. As you can probably tell from my icon, I loved it. I did not, however, love it for Nausicaa. I found her terribly Mary-Sue. Asbel, her potential love interest (if Miyzaki would ever put physical romance in his damn movies), was okay. I think it detracted from it that a young Shia Labouef played his voice, and I could tell he was really having trouble with it, poor thing. My favorite characters were Kushana, the princess of the enemy empire, and her second-in-command, Kurotowa. They're both flawed but not EVIL at all, and their sexual tension is amazing. Sadly, there's not a lot of fanfiction or fanart out there, and Miyazaki never satisfies in this regard. I found one fanfiction (short but amazing), and that's about it. I might have to do something about that. Because I loved the movie so much, I downloaded all of the manga last night and I'm starting to go through it. I have to go slowly, because Miyazaki's manga style is very visually dense--lots of detail to take in.
Today I talked to Lisa and it turns out they want me to do more costuming for the play. I'm now making two aprons, two skirts, and a nun's head-thing (I don't know the word, and I'm sure my Catholic class would have something to say about that). To make matters more difficult, the skirts and aprons are for two girls who have two very different bodies so I can't just make two identical pieces. I suspect I'll be starting on this stuff this weekend, and maybe get time for my cosplays.
