(( For the confused, Torrington hasn't up and disappeared. He's still about as Kombe.
In a recent bout of stories, Akombe Shorttusk - the man that raised Torrington from an infant - travelled to the Arathi Highlands in his usual pattern of going-somewhere-but-going-the-wrong-way. Torrington tried to take him back to his destination - Thunder Bluff - but the pair wound up in a scuffle with an Earth Elemental. When he woke up, the pair staggered back to Hammerfall and Torrington decided to drop the name he "borrowed", as well as his father's surname, in order to finally acknowledge his past.
Torrington Furiey is now Kombe Shorttusk. Same character, no retcons - I don't believe in retcons. Hell, even Talash's past has remained the same - details have just changed because she did make shit up (also, my memory sucks).
The kid's relationship to his father was always strained, at best, as a result of Matojo's original "If I hit him he won't be a fuck-up" attitude - and the fact that they met so late in Tor's life. He was very close to Akombe, but it was his own mother's frequent attempts to hurt him (despite Akombe occasionally beating the utter shit out of her in response) that drove him off. He's now making up for lost time.
I love Akombe. I love writing the pair together. The old Shaman is so clueless - and Kombe himself always so bloody nervous - that the interactions are really fun to write. Including Mekt, another Furiey outcast, makes it all the more interesting to me.
Whether or not this will help me get into him again, well, only time will tell - if nothing else, it'll just help me explore more family dynamics so I can better understand how these characters work, because there's still so much I just don't get.
I should probably actually use the OOC tags in this journal more often. Discussing how characters work is kinda awesome.
