Now that it has been announced on the guild's mailing list and in Council, I suppose I should record it here: As of July 1, I will be Captain of the Waytes of Carolingia.
udalrich did it for ten years; I have a much more modest term in mind. Nobody but me seems surprised. I guess I had really, really hoped somebody else would do the music direction and leave me with just the behind the scenes shouting and pushing things around I have been doing, but it was not to be. I intend to clean up the library over the summer and pass the role of librarian to somebody else (and I do have volunteers). This is going to change what I can do as an individual player since I'll have to be paying attention to a lot more than my own fingering. I guess I should make a point of keeping up my outside musical involvement if I want to keep up what proficiency I have.
I'm not going into the job cold. I've led the occasional small local gig (never comfortably). I've been handling much of the business side for more than a year now. I have the backing of the musicians. I wish I knew more about period music style than I do. I wish I did not still get stage fright. We'll all muddle through anyway.
