I wonder, sometimes, how some people make it through life.

My boss was just accosted by a random woman from one of the campus tours. He tends to be a bit of a character, so when he walked by the tour, one of the guides asked him to say a few words. So he babbled about the Science Library for a bit, told a few (no doubt painful :D) jokes, and went on his way.

A few moments later he noticed one of the mothers from the tour was chasing after him, so he stopped. Without any introduction she demands that he tell her if this is one of those "liberal Catholic schools where they have things like that play, you know the one where they discuss those parts (said in a whisper, pointing downward) down there."

She meant of course "The Vagina Monologues" and she couldn't even bring herself to say the word "vagina" for the sake of the title. And then she asks if there were "gay people" here. She was adamant that her son not be exposed to those kinds of things (to which I have to say, good luck lady ;)).

My boss told her that this is the kind of school where bright people from all backgrounds come together to learn about academics and eachother. That it was the kind of school where students volunteer on the weekends, and give up bikinis and beaches during Spring Break to go build houses, or help renovate a school in Haiti. And where is didn't matter what religion, or sexual orientation or whatever you were. Sounds cheesy, yeah, but for the most part it is true.

When he was through, she just looked him with disgust for a moment and then finally she said, "you are just like the rest of them," and stormed away without another word.

I can see where she might have gotten the impression that my boss was a kindred spirit, he is ultra conservative in many ways, maybe he gives off some kind of vibe :D, but he's not even close to that bad.

Her, "are there gay people here," question particularly amused/irritated me considering she was standing two feet away from one of our student workers who is gay, and who luckily has a sense of humor about such insanity.

I am very glad my boss talked to her instead of me though, because I would probably have said, "oh, you must mean the VAGINA Monologues," and then I would have invited her to the ABiGaLe (Association of Bisexuals, Gays and Lesbians) fashion show/fundraiser in two weeks. At least this is what I would have done once I finished staring at her with my mouth hanging open like a fish out of water. Whaha!?

I know people exist who are like this, I know some of them unfortunately hold positions of power in our government *shudder*, but I don't usually come face to face with it in my own life. I just hope her son can somehow find his own path, and not grow up to think in the same way she does.

For the record this is a Catholic college and they did put on the Vagina Monologues, I think it was last year :).

Methinks this woman's son will not be attending this college :P.
