So last night I saw Grand Funk Railroad in St. Louis with my dad. They came to our town, and yes, they helped party it down. They don't lie. Grand Funk isn't a band I have any prior experience with really short of hearing American Band and the awful Locomotion. I went with dad because I don't spend a lot of time with him so this was a prime chance. Anyway, Grand Funk took to the stage and played very tightly and very well. I guess that happens when you have been touring longer than I have been alive. A lot of the stuff they played was pretty trippy in that 70's sort of way. Psychadelic(maybe that is spelled right) might be the word. I know it would be if you asked my dad who leaned over during one song and told me how it was such a different and awesome experience when wacked out on a lot of pot and acid and how the guitars fuck with you. That is pretty much word for word. I love it when my dad relates stories from his youth lol. The only thing that sucked was the lead singers harmonica playing, I think he just picked it up at a truckstop along the way and pretends to know how to play it. I imagine it goes something like this on the tour bus:
"Max...are you going to play the Harmonica tonight?"
Max: "Yeah...why? Do you think I should play it more than last time?"
Don: "Well...actually...We were thinking maybe you should give it a rest."
Max: "Are you saying I don't know how to play it? Don I have over 3 days of experience with this. I am going to play it."
Something like that. But it was a pretty good time. I also passed up seeing Rancid to see this with dad. It wasn't a choosing Grand Funk over Rancid deal, it was a choosing hanging out with family thing over Rancid. It didn't help though that I was maybe a football field away from the venue Rancid was playing at the whole time. But you know, Rancid sucks live anyway. It is a good time and all, but they aren't very good live. I think it mostly stems from Tim not staying near his microphone to sing when he is supposed to. That's fine though you know? As long as the crowd and musicians are having a good time.
I also felt terrible after the show. I went in to it having a headache from sleeping with my contacts in and then got carsick on the way back to my car from St. Louis. I puked in Borders and then had a hell ride home before puking and going to bed. The best part of the whole night was seeing all the middle aged folks getting down like they were teens to a band from their time. That was nice to see.
