-Fragile Things-
A rainbow flutters in the sky. In the early morning, sunshine passes through the dew, little raindrops crystals making a kaleidoscope out of colors and geometric, perfect shapes of nature around them.
Tiny blue and violet triangles sparkle within delicate wings and disappear into a brighter ray of sun that blinds Watanuki, making him lost the trace of the butterfly.
“Very poetic.” He mutters to himself grumpily, getting back to the task of every morning, taking the dust out of Yuuko’s shop with an old-looking broom. Today there’s no reason to hurry, since it’s Sunday and the whole street is asleep.
Except by that little butterfly.
Cursing himself, Watanuki decides there’s no problem in giving just one more look, since Yuuko drank too much sake the night before and won’t wake up before twelve, asking for a bottle of Eki Kyabe. It’s a rare thing a butterfly passing by when they aren’t part of Yuuko’s carpet decoration anyway, so he might go as well and watch.
Watanuki is hit by the sudden realization that it's beautiful.
Not just the little fragile thing coloring the sky. It had been years since he last looked at the world not expecting a shadow lurking in the corners. It had been hard, he mutters to himself, and it was even harder to know he had been overcame by his fears enough to forget how beauty was ethereal, and how it would disappear if he didn't look for it. Life passed, and he had spent much time looking for darkness instead.
And he fears the deformed, wicked creatures he sees there, because they would eat him and make him be like them too. They crawl in his shame for not being like others, they breathe his desire of not being him.
Watanuki wishes, and where are wishes, there is someone who can fulfill them at their own price.
It's not that difficult to relate the butterfly to Yuuko, really.
Saving him from the darkness?
Watanuki decided he was easily inspired in the morning...
But, he thought, Yuuko is not even half as pretty. And, well, sparkly would not be a word he could easily relate to her.
Plus, the woman was much darker than any monster.
And when he heard a groan from inside the shop, a half-moan, half-scream of his name, asking for help, but demanding it at the same time (and Watanuki knew it would hurt him more if he didn't obey), his thoughts about butterflies vanished in a moment.
Yuuko's a bat, he decided, biting his lower lip and abandoning the broom in the outside, running towards the voice as fast as he could. She's going to suck my life out of me until there's nothing, nothing!
The female's voice grew a little bit stronger.
"Watanukiiiiiiiiiiii!
Yup.
Definitely a bat.
