Year-End Meme, 2005

Dec 31, 2005 18:09

1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?
Went to Italy with my parents. Let’s add “And will never do again” to that, okay?

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t make resolutions, but I’m pretty proud that I kept up with the Tzedakah Project.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes.

5. What countries did you visit?
Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Czech Republic. Nyah.

6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?
A tenure-track job.

7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
January 18th. Even with everything after.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finishing my job applications. Someone needs to write a thesis on streamlining the academic job search.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Probably the issue with Friend. Although I’m still not sure what I did wrong.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Ear infection, the killer flu, racquet to the head, court to the ass

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I’m typing on her!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Lots of friends became Dr. Friend (we won’t discuss what I did at the celebrations).

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
FEMA, FEMA, FEMA

14. Where did most of your money go?
I just ran the numbers, and the Tzedakah Project officially took more cash than my laptop. Embarrassingly close, though.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Giving my talk at IC. And it was totally everything I’d hoped it would be, plus several hugs.

16. What song will always remind you of 2005?
Breathe--2 a.m. by Anna Nalick? Except now I’m frequently the friend awake at 2 a.m., too.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner. Noticeably so, I hear.
iii. richer or poorer? richer

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Let’s resurrect an old answer-work on my thesis.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Wow, another recycler-drinking (ya know what, C? Not sorry, this year).

22. Did you fall in love in 2005?
I kept this one open for a long time, in some weird sort of suspended disbelief. How un-quirkyalone of me.

23. How many one-night stands?
I totally get off on a technicality here. Get off. Hee. I am four.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Jeez, people, this is on the quiz .

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I’m angry with Friend, but there’s no hate involved.

26. What was the best book you read?
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. Although The Time Traveler's Wife was pretty good, too.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
iTunes. Or maybe LAUNCHcast. Kids, back before there was an internet, you had to listen to whatever mainstream CDs you could find at Musicland. It was worse than walking uphill both ways in the snow.

28. What did you want and get?
Size six clothes from Ann Taylor Loft? A seat on a committee that I’ve coveted? Guess the latter is less shallow.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
See The Aristocrats NOW. Get over the fact that they use dirty words. Grow up and realize what’s going on in the infinite variations on a single theme, and ruminate on why that’s somehow more damaging to children than two hours of violence and empty sex.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Don't celebrate it, and 27

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Having an effing job, so I can quit with this crazy process. Or maybe not, since the jobs I want don’t decide until February or March.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005?
Jackets rock and gauchos suck.

34. What kept you sane?
Sadly, sanity was in short supply this year. As y’all may have noticed.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Eclectic Enigma will force me to name a local celebrity, Pub Quiz Guy. Except I don't fancy him so much as I want a conquest point.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Race, Socioeconomic Standing, and Cleaning Up Katrina.

37. Who did you miss?
The MusicNerd and Eclectic Enigma, but now they’re back…and I might always miss Friend.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I’m not really sure I met new people. Oh, let’s go for M the postdoc, ‘cause she’s a good role model and all that. And cool.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005:
Proofread before you seal the envelope.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: Well, still, a pretty good year/ a pretty good year (Tori Amos, Pretty Good Year)
