Summer drenched us all with its roar during this longest day. The vibrations in the air were wickedly fiery. True to form, we adored the sun all damn diggity day ~~ takin on its challenge and enjoying every warm breath he graced us with, blazing down from above...
and assuredly, we partied hard until the moon was up, beaming back the reflected light of her brother, still charged with the Glory of his day.
The day started early with the arrival of Kelly, my faerie-esque aquarian monkey pal. She's a breath of fresh air and hung out while we got ready to go to Red apple for a standardized breakfast. Steve had crashed that night, so I had back up for the Magickal Adventure i was about to embark upon.
I had agreed to take both Devi and Kali to Cranbrook and let them run around and explore the Universe. Ang and Gordy were in the middle of erecting a giant concrete phallus out of the circle in their backyard. (seriously!) the backyard was trashed so it really worked out that i was getting the kids out of the house. We had an absolute blast! On the way to Cranbrook the girls were trading mantras back and forth...Devi taught me Aum Mani Padme Hum. We talked about Solstice and how wonderfully long this day was going to be. how we were going to drink up each sunbeam. we were going to see giant trees, and statues and gardens...bridges and lakes, streams...snakes made out of rocks that live in the meadow...
we tried to jazz it up for them -- getting them psyched about walking thru these big white gates and wondering what realm we had entered. Steve and I engaged in a debate about whether or not Sekhmet was an appropriate image for this Holy Day ~~ as we walked in, we found an empty fountain, half covered in wines with the image of a lion. she also had a dead rat hanging out in the fount.
We passed thru the gates with the stone pillar that pronounced "A.D. 1904" I always have to smile whenever i walk into Cranbrook and see that...just thinking about how such a beautiful place is as old (or young!) as the Law.
First we climbed around the houses and balconies, moving up and down stone staircases, across patches of grass, in and out of elaborate white tents bearing many chandeliers~~ there was always another statue or image lurking around a corner. we found a small reflecting pond with sprinklers running and the girls charged down the pathway with their butterfly nets waving over their heads.
heading off into the grass we danced our way to the rock snake. the girls took turns jumping from rock to rock as it slithered its way thru the curves of the meadow. we then entered the forest to see the "giant tree" -- the best motherfucka climbing tree i have ever seen! (And believe me, i climb a lot of trees). I found an old mark i left in the tree from midsummers of 1999 -- an interesting moment.
Then...OFF into the woods for a little hike. man i love those girls -- when given a choice between two paths, they almost always chose the left-handed. wicked.
we found a picnic table under a tree in the woods and so proceeded to feast on bananas, oranges, peanut butter crackers, trail mix, water, and some cookies. the girls took turns beating up on steve and running around like warriors with sticks -- a few times kali shouted threats to random daemons.
traipsing on we popped out by a parking lot for the entrance to the museum. it was odd to see civilization again, but i felt a little glowy when we saw the structure we had come across. five pillas of various stones were curving towards a low wall bearing the starry skies with the constellations, and a long low sine wave streaking across to trace the ecliptic. i ran my finger along the edge of the ecliptic, noticing a groove that would have made it possible for a minature sun to roll along the path. i let my finger linger at the zenith of the ecliptic...facing this summer. the heat is on...hear it begins! yet the days grow shorter as we speak, my friend.
back into the woods we plunged, the girls holding hands and occasionally gracing us with an "aum" of some sort. we walked around the lake and over a bridge or two, scared some geese, pulled a tarot card and a word for the solstice. when i began the ritual to do my mantra it began to sprinkle little watery kisses. we packed up the girls to move under a tree, but i contined with the mantra. i do love the rain in the summertime -- luv to feel that rain on my face.
the rain soon sizzled away and we continued our hike. after a few twists and turns we stumbled into a clearing with a nine foot high fountain spilling cascades over water over a blue/green tiled mosiac. the fountain had one pool overflowing from the initial downpouring. we all looked at each other with sly smiles before deciding to take off our shoes and wade in the water. devi contented to kick her feet by the side, but Kali, Steve and i climbed in and out ~~ inspecting the fountain, splashing and laughing.
after the fountain escape we emerged into the oriental gardens with its mazes of bridges and islands...and then soon after we spilled back by the gate with the 1904 on the pillar. i looked at steve and said, "oh! i guess we should go!"
driving back we picked up ice cream and then proceeded to get ridiculously bombarded when the sun began to think about going down. everybody looked gorgeous, tinkles of coins shaking with every twitch of ang's hips. monica was decked out in tender blues, and the girls had new saris to sport. the indian feast was ready and willing. lounging outside by the eight sided low tables, we stretched across purple and green sheets, and a multitude of pillows, many a wine red shade.
as the sun began to think about setting we brought that solar energy straight thru the night. the candles were kickin, the girls were dancing in the moonlight and roaring to the stars...
i had a glorious time, even though i stayed to my shadows once i returned from hanging out with the girls. i needed to keep to myself some what...place some distance around me.

anyway, that's solstice. today i'm back to work. i made shit for cash and i picked up friday. as i was driving home from work, i thought to begin my mantra, but i tested a quick scan thru the dial on the radio. "...i can see clearly now the rain is gone...i can see all obstacles in my way...." i had to smile at the reference to my mantra directed towards the Remover of Obstacles. all during my drive and my mantras, i was able to share the company of a brilliantly lit full moon. engorged on the reflected light of her brother.
