Applying to Mathematics PhD programs

I apologize if this is somewhat outside the usual scope of this community but I feel that I’m more likely to get an accurate assessment here than elsewhere. I am applying to mathematics graduate programs for next year and am trying to assess my chances. I am worried because I only have a 3.15 GPA overall and my major GPA is about the same (3.1-3.2 depending on this semester’s grades). However, I am coming from a top university with a very strong mathematics department (ranked first or second place in mathematics depending on which ranking you look at). Also, for my first several semesters I received all A’s and A+’s but I started having some difficulty when I learned that my partner was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Since then I have been getting mostly B’s and I even got a C+ in complex analysis. However, this semester I have been doing much better since I have started to come to terms with what is happening in my personal life and will probably be getting a handful of A’s. I am wondering if you think Graduate Admissions officers might be more lenient with my GPA considering the difficulty of the classes at my university as well as my circumstances. Any advice is greatly appreciated Thanks :)

p.s. the schools I’m considering are for example UC Santa Cruz, Stanford, UC Davis, etc.
