Moment of Inertia of a plane ellipse

Nov 17, 2009 22:56

Hello,

I have a problem, I am supposed to show that the moment of inertia of a plane ellipse x2/a2 + y2/b2 = 1, row = 1 about the z axis is I0 = 1/4πab(a2 + b2).

And this problem would be simple if I could convert it to polar coordinates, but I'm not sure how to figure out the radius of an ellipse in polar.

I found this on Wikipedia,

but I'm not sure if that works here...

Please help! Thanks!
