Ubuntu 10.04 Will Not Recognize The Existence of The Internet

Aug 30, 2010 17:27

When the new computer had Windows, it could see networks and get online. Now that I've installed Ubuntu on it, it can't see networks or get online. Jonathan Godbout told me, "Ubuntu 10.04 must not come with a network card driver. You need to install one." So I Googled "Ubuntu 10.04 network card driver," and found that Ubuntu 10.04 does come with a network card driver, and Internet works right out of the box for everyone else who installs Ubuntu 10.04.

Can somebody help me? Please remember in doing so that I am less computer literate than your grandmother, and have no right whatsoever to even use a computer, much less use Linux. Pretend you're talking to someone from a 3rd world country who has never seen a computer and has an IQ around 75.

PROGRESS ON FACEBOOK SO FAR:

Jacob Hurwitz: Are you trying to get online with a wireless card or with an Ethernet cable? Before I could use my wireless card, I had to go to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to activate it.

Devin Murphy: man ifconfig

Robin 'Mathgirl' Wilke: nothing works - no wireless, no Ethernet.

Robin 'Mathgirl' Wilke: also... the fact that Gauss II could get online when he had Windows tells me he must have some piece of corresponding hardware, but System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers doesn't detect any proprietary drivers. It also gave me the message, "Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available."

Robin 'Mathgirl' Wilke: Devin, ifconfig doesn't see any networks available, even though I'm sitting in a wireless-infused computer lab.

Thank you in advance.
