I am participating in a study at Fletcher Allen on the effects of amino acid supplements on exercise performance. I get free fitness testing, including a VO2 max test, a free DEXA, free supplements, even a muscle biopsy... it's an exercise addict's dream. Plus, I get fasting bloodwork once a week for five weeks!
There has to be a catch, and there is. The researcher told me to re-read the consent form more carefully before coming for my first visit. It turns out I have to give up caffeine. Completely.
So, this is an end to excuses about not being able to give up caffeine while I'm in a situation of required strenuous intellectual activity - because if I'd kept that up, I would never be able to give up caffeine. I am always in situations of required strenuous intellectual activity, and will be continuously until I die. A vacation in academia means doing research somewhere else. I am very grateful for this study. I think I want all the fitness testing badly enough to quit caffeine for it. I mean, these are tests I'd need to be a pro athlete to get, or go off to a millionaires' health clinic and spend a year's salary on three days. So really, they're offering me a bribe worth about $4000 to quit caffeine.
And it starts tonight. After 10 p.m. tonight, caffeine is out of my life for at least five weeks.
