Old habits die hard.

I mean, really, really hard. Such is the case for one Yuffie Kisaragi, who was turning a simply beautiful red materia over in her fingers, admiring it with a cocky grin before putting it in the satchel on her hip. You would never guess that people in Edge could conceal such treasures. Well, from the average eye, at least. Yuffie prided herself on her keen instincts when it came to materia, and you'd never find a better hunter wherever you go (she'll tell you as much herself). There was a reason her collection was the biggest out of them all, and there was a reason that the others, even as trusting of her as they were now, still kept their materia closely guarded...though that she wasn't as proud of. Would it kill them to lighten up once in a while? Sheesh.

Not-so-humble first meetings aside, Yuffie would often wonder about what it would have been like if she hadn't met Cloud and the others. Probably somewhere in Wutai, somewhere on the run, somewhere far from the place of contentment she was now. And she'd have to admit she'd be hard-pressed to find a group who could find it somewhere within to forgive a girl like her for stealing one of their most valuble treasures at least once and then making a few more innocent attempts. Even if her loose fingers weren't seeking materia out for glory or whatnot, well...it's instinct! At least, that's what she told herself, watching the mercenary across the street suddenly realize his lack of summon materia.

And it wasn't as though her teammates -- her friends bothered her like she thought they did, at the tender age of 16. It wasn't as though she was always trying to sneak by them anymore either. She could be open and friendly to them all, even to Vincent. THAT is an accomplishment, she'd think. When you can befriend tall, dark, and sleeps-inna-coffin, anyway. Even if Cid could be a sexist jerk, or Cloud always acted like he had a tiny raincloud above his head when he moped, or when all the others displayed those 'weirdo issues' as Yuffie called them, even if...well, she had plenty of her own, she could still relate to all of them, after all they'd been through and all they had accomplished. The mental title of 'World Saver' alongside her title of 'Greatest Ninja Ever' made her plenty proud...but none of them could have done it on their own. It was a team effort. Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red, Vincent, Cid, Reeve, Yuffie, and...Aeris. They were all together now, and Aeris with them too, with the ribbons on their arms and the bond that death couldn't break.

A team. A family.

A kind of family...Yuffie wasn't familiar with, but could get plenty used to. Even if she was playing the role of the youngest, bratty, but always-right sister.

Yuffie could hear a shout from Tifa coming from inside the bar. She knew she was needed to do some work today, a particularly boring kind. She stretched her skinny arms over her head with a distracted 'coming, coming!' before extending a hand to open the door. Where she expected to see boxes of things needed to be delivered, the busy figure of her friend Tifa, her boots tapped onto cement. She let out an 'eep' before jumping back, where she hit a lamppost hard. The doorknob had felt like it had been pulled from her hand. A sudden shock that was...well, none too welcome.

"Guys...?" She asked into the nothingness of the city air, obvious uncertainty in her voice. "You jerks! This isn't funny! You don't just...pull stupid tricks on me like that!" Though she knew it wasn't Tifa who'd do something like this, and the others couldn't, it was only her nature to seek someone to blame.

Even if, in this case, there really wasn't.
