Background
Edo, the glorious capital of Japan whose streets are walked by prideful samurai has fallen after the sudden invasion of extraterrestrial beings, the Amanto. Taking the reigns from the Shougnate, the Amanto started off by slapping a ban of possessions of katana/swords - the symbol and pride of the Samurai of Edo and turning ancient Edo into a futuristic city completed with space terminals and flying ship. Defeated and fallen from grace, the Samurai were now outcast of the modernized Edo. However, there were some Samurai whom refused to resign to their fate and have formed underground resistance groups aimed to overthrow the Amanto and the government.
In response to the Amanto invasion and the fall of Edo, in comes the Kihetai. Led by Takasugi Shinsuke, Joui war veteran, the Kiheitai quickly earn reputation as the most dangerous and high-profile resistance group. In contrast to his other Joui war comrade Katsura, who believes in saving the country without resorting to violence, Takasugi's main objective is to cleanse the post-joui war Edo off foreign ideas and the only way to accomplish this is to destroy it. Briefly mentioned, the Kiheitai was planning on a large scale attack against the Shogunate and Amanto. This has alerted the Shinsengumi, appointed police force for the Shogunate albeit rather inefficient, and has placed the Kiheitai top priority on their wanted list.
Kijima Matako, the only female in the Kiheitai is the subject here. She lives by a simple principle - “Respect is earned, not given”. This is evident in her interactions with Takasugi and Henbeita Takechi, strategist of the Kiheitai. During her extremely short screen time, Matako is seen addressing Henbeita as “Takechi-Senpai”, an honorific for “senior”. However, being the sarcastic young lady she is, Matako is quick to change the honorific title to “Takechi-hentai” (hentai being a pervert, a pun on the similar sound of Senpai and Hentai) whenever Henbeita annoys her with his moral philosophies and gender inequity for females speeches. As for Takasugi, she highly respects him and is always addressing him as “Shinsuke-sama”. Almost like a body guard to Takasugi, Matako watches over him closely and cares for him almost to the point of slight obsession. She is also prone to using his name in most sentences she speaks.
A fearless young girl who believes in her abilities to emerge victorious in any situations, Matako is quick to jump into a fight with her six shooters ready to spit death in both hands. Matako is also extremely quick-tempered and highly-strung and is prone to screaming when irritated or provoked. She does not tolerate conformation and will not stand for being restricted in any way. She is a determined fighter who fights for what she believes is important and is fiercely loyal to her comrades - if the loyalty is mutual.
Matako is often ridiculed by the opposite gender on the battlefield and even within her faction as it was uncommon for females to wield weapons and fight alongside men on the battlefield during the time period she was from. However, Matako is extremely skilled in using a pair of pistols and is always ready to pull them out of their holster at any chances. Nicknamed “Red Bullet”, she is feared on the battlefield for her fast attacks and deadly twin six shooters. Being a young girl who likes to wear short skirts, her opponents usually get an eyeful of her undies. This has become a distinct trademark of the feisty blonde of the Kiheitai and is also a joke within the testosterone dominated battlefield.
