New Society

Sometime very soon I am going to wake up one morning, look in the mirror and find out that I have changed into one of those students who not only join societies, but are active in them or worse, set up a new society. I will probably find that I have also voted in one or other election thingy at university and am about to become president of the Students Union. I hope Petra won't be too frightened when she wakes up and sees a person beside her she doesn't recognise.

Because, seriously, what am I thinking of???

This started as a joke. Meeting with another PhD student and an MA student, all three of us bored silly with our theses and wondering why the heck don't we give up and go teaching English in Mongolia (My supervisor's reply to that: "Oh, don't do that! Mongolia is full of people who didn't finish their thesis!" - You have to know him to realise how it sounded: hilarious!). The other PhD student tells us of her university, where they have a society for PhD students, which basically means funding for CAKE. Now, "cake" was the magic word here. We started wondering whether we could organise something to get funding for cake and we said, why don't we do the same thing? At some stage in the talk afterwards about what the new society would do and how it would look like, it stopped being a joke and got serious. And now we have posters up at university, a website, and we're meeting the societies officer next week. And it's all so exciting! It just looks like it's going to be really cool. Have a look at the website, and you'll see what I mean. But... yes, this does mean that I'm setting up a society, will be in the committee and all that and that is just a bit strange for a girl who used to just study and ignore other people...
