Chapter 3:
Matsumoto World Finance Group building, North Wing stairwell 18th Floor, 9:19:00
“Ohno Satoshi,” said the voice blaring out from the speakers, “How dare you run away from us. To return the favour, look what I did,”
Ohno froze when he heard his name being called. Oh crap! So they did know he ran away. And what do they mean by ‘look what I did’? But not really wanting to know, Ohno flung the stairwell door open, and sped down the corridor to where the meeting room was.
But before he could even get there, Ohno nearly died from shock. He stood rooted to the floor, hating himself.
“Toma!” gasped Ohno.
Ohno’s knees gave way under him, causing him to fall into a pitiful ball on the ground. It was his fault Toma was in a mess. If he wasn’t so desperate to get out of the cafeteria, Toma’s life wouldn’t be in danger.
“It’s all my fault,” mumbled Ohno to himself, wrapping his hands around his folded legs, “It’s my fault,” he chanted.
Matsumoto Mansion, Kaeda’s office, 9:20:00
“Kaeda-sama,” began Nishida, his face all sweaty from running up several flights of stairs at a speed which he could not imagine, “The Matsumoto World Finance Group building has been hijacked!”
Kaeda’s face didn’t show any emotion. She picked up the remote and switched on the tv. There, on the screen, was a live report on the whole hijacking of the building, although what was happening inside couldn’t be seen.
“The terrorists demand a 10 million yen ransom,” continued Nishida, producing a sheet of paper from the pocket.
Kaeda received the paper, but didn’t follow up.
Matsumoto World Finance Group building, 21st Floor vents, 9:21:32
Jun tried to crawl as fast as he could to the first opening he could find, so he could get out of this hell of a place, but wasn’t making much progress since Sho was still grabbing onto his leg.
“Sakurai Sho! Let me go or I’ll kill you!” threatened Jun, giving Sho a snarl.
“I rather you kill me than let you surrender yourself,”
The pair stared at each other in silence, until Sho decided to speak, “Look, if they really had Nino, shouldn’t they tie him to the time bomb instead of Toma?”
Jun nodded at Sho’s logic and wondered how Sho could be so smart, “so what’s the plan, Mr Keio Graduate?”
Sho grinned.
Matsumoto World Finance Group building, Security Centre, 9:21:40
He made it in one piece.
After hearing the announcement, Nino was so worried that he ran at ‘Aiba-speed’ to the security centre in an attempt to stop Jun before he surrendered himself to the terrorists.
Now there he was standing right in front of the doors of the security centre wondering how to get in. It’s not like he doesn’t have the pass or something, it’s just that Nino had no idea who was on the other side of the door. But Nino didn’t have time, Jun could very well be on his way to wherever he was supposed to turn himself in.
The first idea he had was to knock out whoever it was on the other side, but Nino didn’t have time to continue his plan as a click sound followed by the sound of turning door knobs could be heard.
“Oh shit,” mumbled Nino, racking his brain for an idea. By this time, the door started swinging inwards. Letting his instinct take charge, Nino rammed his body straight into the metal door, wincing at the pain. He heard a ‘what the -’ which was immediately followed by a loud thud. His curiosity getting the better of him, Nino peered around the door, and saw, on the floor, a masked man.
Nino stared at the terrorist unconscious on the floor, “maybe I knocked him out when I ran into the door,” Nino told himself, feeling very smug. But now isn’t the time to rejoice. Nino kicked the door shut and headed to the controls.
When he got to the control panel, Nino cursed so loudly, he bet the whole building could hear him. What’s up with these elaborate controls?! Taking a wild guess, Nino smashed a button. Instantly, a screen showed the cafeteria. Nino took a second to rejoice before thinking of a plan.
Matsumoto World Finance Group building, North Wing stairwell 21st Floor, 9:23:20
Aiba had no idea where he was.
After crawling around for so long inside the vents, Aiba had no idea which part of the building he was in, nor which floor he was on. He had suddenly found an exit, which led him to a stairwell.
Trusting his luck, Aiba ran upwards. Soon enough, he was on a proper floor: the 21st floor to be exact. Great! He was three floors above the meeting room where Sho was. Cursing his dumb luck, Aiba ran back to the stairwell, thankful that they were now empty as everybody else had surrendered themselves at the cafeteria, or else he would have to go by the vents again, which was something he didn’t want to do.
Just as he was about to go back to the stairwell, he heard some strange noises which forced him to stop. It sounded a lot like voices, familiar voices…Sho’s and Jun’s. But why were their voices coming from inside the wall?
“Sho?” Aiba said out loud, every cell in his body hoping that he had finally found Sho.
The muffled voices stopped abruptly, before Aiba heard someone calling his name.
“Aiba!” cried Sho from inside the wall, “Aiba, is that really you?!”
Aiba found himself pressed against the wall in an attempt to get closer to Sho, but they were still separated by that darn wall.
“Yes, it’s me,” replied Aiba, trying not to burst into tears.
“Listen, Aiba,” came Jun’s voice, “we haven’t got much time. I need you to get to the research labs on the 35th floor. There, you will find a black colored file and a CD. Grab those and keep it safe, destroy everything else,”
“But...” protested Aiba, pressing himself even closer to the wall, “Sho…”
“Aiba…” he heard Sho whine from the other side of the wall. Aiba was pretty sure Jun was rolling his eyes at them.
“Aiba, go!” yelled Jun, as Aiba felt someone whack the wall from the other side, “once we get out of here, I’ll send Sho to you, now go!”
Without a choice, Aiba patted the wall one last time, before speeding off in the direction of the Research Lab.
