Chapter 10:

It has only been a day since he discovered that he was the grandson of the president of Johnny’s Entertainment, and how Satoshi’s, Sho’s and Jun’s company went bankrupt, and everything had made a drastic change.

For starters, when he arrived at school, there was a red carpet already rolled out especially for him. At first, Nino was shocked that his schoolmates were actually cheering for him. He had thought they were waiting for Satoshi, Sho and Jun, but they were screaming his name. Choruses of ‘Nino’ were everywhere as Nino timidly walked down the red carpet, feeling extremely awkward. Just a week ago, he was the one at the back of the crowd, green with envy. Nino scanned the back of the crowd, were he usually would be, and to his surprise, he saw three familiar faces. Satoshi, Sho and Jun were at his spot. It’s like their roles were switched. He made eye contact with them for a split second, feeling very sorry at their current plight, but Jin’s words started playing in his head, making Nino despise them and thinking how they deserved it. He broke eye contact with them and walked off to his classroom.

Lessons that day felt so heavenly! Not once was he pelted with erasers, there weren’t any glue on his chair, and nobody tripped him along the corridor or ambushed his locker. It felt great. During break, everybody, seriously, EVERYBODY, started crowding around him and offered him their food. Overwhelmed, Nino simply sat there and nodded at everything they say even if he had no idea what they said. Before he knew it, there were bentou boxes piled sky high on his desk, and more would have been added if it weren’t for Jin who suddenly showed up and shooed them away from Nino’s desk.

“Nino here is my best friend,” announced Jin loudly, placing an arm over Nino’s shoulders, “right, Nino?”

Best friend? Well, technically, they weren’t friends since Jin was the one who would normally give him the face when Nino was near him. Nino had never spoken a single word to Jin before that time when Jin told Nino about Satoshi’s, Sho’s and Jun’s plans.

Sensing that Nino was having second doubts, Jin tightened his arm around Nino, “Nino, I was the one who told you of their devious plans. That totally proves that I’m your friend, right?”

Nino nodded hastily, thinking that Jin did make sense. But right now, he needed some time to adjust to his school’s new attitude towards him. Leaving Jin to boast about being best friends with the ‘heir of Johnny’s Entertainment’, Nino got up and discreetly snuck out of class.

Up to the rooftop Nino went, wanting to get some fresh air as well as get away from everything. Using his body to push the door open as his hands were full, Nino heard soft whispers coming from his secret hideout. Nino made his way around the corner, and saw - none other than the three brothers.

“Nino…” breathed Satoshi upon seeing Nino’s arrival. Sho and Jun who were back facing him turn around and nodded to acknowledge his existence. Nino nodded back, debating with himself if he should stay here and finish his snack of assorted sushi or go somewhere else where the three weren’t.

He chose the former.

“Congrats on finding your grandfather,” said Sho pleasantly, breaking the awfully awkward silence.

“Thanks,” mumbled Nino, more to his sushi than to Sho.

“So what are you doing here?” asked Jun, placing a heavy emphasis on the word ‘you’, “shouldn’t you be downstairs with your fans?”

Jun’s words stung Nino’s heart, and it showed on his face.

“Jun!” yelled Satoshi, trying to chide his younger brother, “Nino, Jun didn’t mean that,”

Nino continued eating his food, wanting to finish it so he could get away. Sho’s stomach just had to pick this time to complain. He saw Sho flush in embarrassment. Nino smiled and slid his bentou box across the concrete floor to the three.

Silence filled the air once again as Nino watched the three devour his food, as though they had been starving, which was probably the case since their company became bankrupt in the blink of an eye, and they probably were living off scraps.

“Wanna know why none of us wanted to be the next heir of YM Studios?” asked Satoshi out of the blue once he swallowed a piece of Tamago maki.

Nino nodded.

“Because we wouldn’t be able to tell who’s sincere in being our friend or who’s not,” answered Jun, handing the now empty bentou box back to Nino. Seeing the look of confusion on Nino’s face, Sho explained, “you see, many would want to come near us hoping they can get some benefits for being our ‘friends’,”

“I heard Jin told you take we were using you as a bet,” said Jun, sitting down to Nino’s left.

Satoshi added hastily, “that was true. WAS,”

“Our feelings for you are real,” said Sho, holding both of Nino’s hands into his while looking deeply into his eyes.

No. Nino couldn’t believe they would still use this trick on him. The game was over now, wasn’t it? After their company went bust, the whole school had been ignoring them, and Nino was now treated like a god, so why would the school still gang up with the three to prank Nino? Unless…unless what they were saying was true.

“It’s true,” assured Jun and Satoshi at the same time.

Nino couldn’t lie to himself any longer. He knew he had feelings for the three of them. He knew he wanted to be with them. But there was one of the three who he had the strongest feelings for.

“I…I…I,” stammered Nino, unable to find the words to express his feelings.

“You don’t have to pick one of us right now, we’ll give you more time,” said Sho reassuringly.

“No,” insisted Nino, “I know who I like the best,” he added in a small voice.

Other than the day he found out Johnny-jii-chan was his grandfather, Nino’s smile had never been wider. His grin was so wide that it took up half his face as the wind blew into his face.

A high-speed camera flashed his way, but Nino couldn’t be bothered about the roller coasters cameras taking unglam pictures of him. The ride was over soon enough and Nino was walking out from the ride, not before collecting his crutches from the staff. Satoshi and Jun waved to him as he led the trembling Sho.

“Don’t ever make me do that again,” protested Sho, holding on to Satoshi for support as he tried to adjust to the steady floor after having just came out from a death-defying rollercoaster.

Nino pouted.

“Sho-nii-chan! You promised to make Nino happy no matter what it took!” objected Jun. He then turned to Nino who was trying to suppress his laughter, “If Sho-nii bullies you, come to me. I don’t care if he’s my older brother, I’ll still kick his ass for you,”

“Oi!”

Nino watched Sho and Jun playfully whacking each other on the heads while Satoshi was busy trying to separate the two, laughing along with them. Things couldn’t get better.

Or not.
