I was just reading that the death toll from the tsunami has reached 71,000. On last night's national news I saw that the U.S. government has pledged to give $35 million in relief aid. I suppose that probably sounds like a lot of money to a lot of people, and I suppose if you're down and out, living hand-to-mouth, it is a lot of money. However for the wealthiest nation in the world, $35M is chump change. I mean do the arithmetic... there are nearly 300 million of us Americans, so we're talking about a dime or so for every man, woman and child living here. Is it any wonder the rest of the world sneers at us these days?

Let's hope the private sector does a better job than the government on this one. Here's a list of various agencies accepting donations.
