Interesting thoughts. I find that when I work to gather some people to head to a A&S type event one of the hindrances I hear is something along the line of
"I would rather make "X" and just don't have the time for A&S"
A lamentable attitude but is it unavoidable? Frequently I run threw class lists and find little to interest some of our newer people. Etaine's round tables are a really neat idea and while I would love to see and attend more of them, they may be a little too heady for a new member. On the other hand another SCA 101 class is not likely to draw many old hands. I think the change may need to happen on a local level, bringing A&S to the local table not as an option of something to due when (for example) you can not fight but something that is a matter of course. Trying to make the SCA a re-enactment organization rather than a semi-historical/fantasy social club. I think the leadership of the SCA (star power) can really lead the way as you said, and bring us as an organization to a higher level. Household leaders, Landed Baron/Baronesses, peers, seated royalty, all need to heed the call and lead their people onto the field....The A&S field rather than the battlefield.
