Truthfully I'd like to understand how this will play out against the "family values" issues that the Republicans generally spend so much time on.

I'll make a prediction. The talking points will be:

1) We are all sinners and sinners make mistakes;
2) But having made a mistake, she is following the approved behavioral template by keeping the baby (both in the non-abortion sense and in the non-adoption sense) and marrying the father;
3) This enables her to Be Forgiven and restored to the fold;
4) Therefore rather than embodying the hypocrisy of Social Conservatism, she reinforces their agenda while making it impossible for Social Liberals to use her as an issue without hypocrisy on their side.

Of course, the announcement nicely distracts from the "Trig is really Bristol's baby" rumors by appearing to appropriate the main theme (unwed teen mother) while dodging the more important themes (about dishonesty, coverup, falsification of government records, or in the most Pollyannaish of scenarios where Sarah is the real mother, near-criminal child endangerment). Mind you, we have nothing more than their word that Bristol currently is pregnant, or is pregnant with the announced timing. Women lose pregnancies all the time, and who would be so mean-spirited as to require full medical disclosure were she to emerge from a private emergency clinic having ...
