Awesome, awesome football weekend.
I am so proud of my Arsenal boys all the time lately, I can't even say. Back in September I was talking to my dad about the team and how one of the morals I had picked up from him was that a person who abandons their sports team when they start to play badly is basically scum, and he said of course that was true, but there was probably a reasonable grace period for the first year or two where you could decide 'hey, this was a mistake, I don't like this team as much as I thought I did' and bow out without being one of Those Fans. At the time, I told him I was pretty sure I was past the point of no return with Arsenal, whether that was a bad idea or not. And damn, did it seem like a bad idea for awhile. But it has been so rewarding watching them turn things around - not just that they've stayed in the Champions League and dragged themselves back up to the Top Four on the table, but the whole atmosphere is different. Like we've got a team full of players who honestly want to be there and are working their tails off for the team. Like they actually expect to be able to win their matches! Vantastic is an amazing captain, clearly, but hearts in my eyes for all of them.
I am going to be smug about Man City and United getting knocked out of the Champions League for as long as humanly possible. I feel a bit bad for the adorable David Silva, but Samir Nasri is getting everything his traitorous little ass deserves. And the Spurs got beaten by Stoke City! Whom I also loathe, but unlike the Spurs they aren't above us on the table, so yay for Stoke!
And of course, fuck yeah El Clasico. Much, much less overwrought than last year, and way more enjoyable as a result. Although I am still annoyed at Sergio Ramos for that ugly studs-up tackle on Messi. What can I say, he brings out my over-protective side. Really happy with the result, obviously - there's been so much doom and gloom about Barca's performance lately in comparison to RM, I honestly wasn't going into this match with a lot of confidence, and the 30-second goal didn't restore any. But I think it says a lot about the strength of the team that they didn't let that break their nerve, and they totally killed in the second half. And my bb Cesc landed his first Clasico goal! *pets his surprised pineapple hair*
Of course, much applause for Werder Bremen and their flawless victory this weekend. Not my team, but
colourofsaying is pretty happy right now.
