Shortly after Gene was born, Yoko and I clashed on the issue of TV. She likes to have the TV on pretty much all the time, whereas I don't, and I really really wanted to avoid having Gene fall into the same trap. I came out ahead for a while, especially when Yoko actually saw Gene sort of shut down when the TV was on, staring slack-jawed and unresponsive.

Then, when he was about a year old, we went in to his daycare for an observation day, and the issue of TV came up during a discussion circle. One of Gene's daycare teachers essentially said that is was OK to have little tiny kids watch the TV if you needed to cook dinner or whatever, and at that very instant I lost the argument forever.

I still try to limit what and how much Gene watches. We have a DVD of videos that my dad took during our visit last summer, and I finally burned a disk of all the videos I've taken of Gene over the last two years. I also have the B:TAS boxed set that Gene and I are working our way through one episode at a time. Gene recognized Batman and the Joker on sight, and we sort of play at superheroes after each episode. I'm trying my best to keep it down to no more than an hour a day, and no more that 30 minutes at a time, and to avoid broadcast TV entirely. It will be easier once it finally starts snowing.
