A perfect evening. Practically, I suppose I could say that an evening spent anywhere that I was fed, warm, and no one was trying to kill me would fill that bill admirably. But as long as we are wishing for banthas, we might as well go for the whole herd.
A thinly settled world, one with just enough technology to build a solid shelter and provide running water, electricity, and indoor plumbing. A few friends, or perhaps just one friend, having a simple but hearty meal together, washed down with icy fresh water. A snug room, with a soft woven rug on the floor, two over-sized hassocks plopped on the rug, big enough to fall into and be cradled by the stuffing. Perhaps a small fire in the grate, casting a flickering light on the room and us.
Then, finding a book of poetry - good, strong, story poems, not the muddled blank verse that pervades today - and reading them aloud to each other, choosing our favorites and sharing them.
Retiring to bed together, sharing whatever seems best at the moment, whether it be love-making or even just a gentle kiss good night. Sleeping soundly in the night with someone you love and trust.
