Yeah, I've tried a few workout plans like that, but the results have never been close to the specialized workouts trainers give me, since they're able to find my limits and push me right to them. The best I've found out of books was Body for Life, but it's rigorous enough that I haven't been able to stick with it long enough since I've been married. I'll definitely check out the links, though, since they look not only structured, but simple enough to do at home, which is handy for my current situation.

The rub is that even those who claim to help you eat less or exercise more don't really care whether you lose weight or not, just so long as you keep buying what they're selling. Cut to the chase: Personal trainers are a gigantic fucking scam.

I'd be tempted to say that Weight Watchers is different. They give you a lot of tips on how to eat better at home and ways to avoid doing Bad Things in your diet, and even if you stop going you can still follow the guidelines they set out and still lose. The big difference there is that the group is more for support and help.

That's my experience, anyway; I managed to lose quite a bit, at least until I started having to rely on cheap, unhealthy food. :|

Those fitness gyms in general are just a bunch of scams. I'm not saying exercise in general is, or that all of them are, but the "bigger" ones (24 Hour, etc) usually are. Hell, even their commercials state that "certain features" are only with 26-month subscription (in microscopic print, of course ( ... )

Weight Watchers may be a bit different, but I couldn't stomach the groups so I just did it online. The difference in the group may be that you're getting support from other people going through it at the same time, not so much from Weight Watchers itself. Just doing it online worked decently well, too. It's actually a pretty good system.
