Before I start, I have to say...the color page with the three meisters and their partners in hand was pretty cool. Seeing them in their new attire is a good change from a fifteen month long EPIC arc. Although, Kiddo-kun's attire so far remains the same, but the color page gave us a sneak peek on what Kiddo will wear when he finally gets out of the book.
Also, I would like to point out that Black Star and Tsubaki's attire is much cuter better and more them than that Naruto/Kingdom Hearts attire that they were wearing for the first part of the this Manga. It shows you how much Black Star and Tsubaki has grown as characters, leaving childish things in the past and excepting the future that lies ahead of them. However, Black Star still has that immature attitude from time to time, but it's less frequent than before.
The first part of this chapter begins with Soul and Maka hunting down their 100th soul (it makes it 100, because they already harvested a witch soul). It appears that a small time-skip has happened from chapter 61. And as the chapter goes on, you can see how much time has passed since the Baga Yaga's castle arc.
Second part of the chapter is back in Shibusen at a Dojo type room where students are sparing with other students. Tsubaki and Nygus are well focused and surprised at the interesting match in front of them. Kim is sparring with the unbeatable Patti, who has won five matches in a row and hasn't dulled one bit. Nygus is disappointed that a talent like Patti is left as a mere weapon. Which I believe, since Kiddo isn't present, will use her sister for the mean time. Patti will be the Temporary Meister for team Death.
Back to Patti, she finishes Kim off with a throw. Ox and Harvard are on scene, with broken glasses, bloody nose and the whole shabang. It looks like Patti has defeated Ox, who has a full head of hair. Another sign that a small time skip was taken place. And this is where I get a little mad at Ohkubo (which he rarely does, I mean he is more unpredictable at times, but sometimes he over does it). The fact that Harvard and Ox thinks that Patti is at Maka's level is somewhat over the top. Maybe Patti does have it in her, but the fact that she is up to par with Maka is alittle too much. Patti is strong her way and in her own level. Maybe being strong for a weapon. Maka is Maka and Patti is Patti. Don't compare the Anti-Demon wavelength and Soul Perception honor student to the Awesome, Gorgeous, Epic, Gar, loving hyper child, who-defeated-Black Star-with-a-kick woman. But, I guess Ohkubo did that to show us how strong Patti could be compare to one of the strong woman protagonist in the series.
Speaking Patti and comparing strengths, Black Star decided to spare with Patti, to really measure how Patti can stand in a REAL battle. As Nygus announce the match to begin, he calls time and decides to tie his hands together, to make it more interesting. HE keeps saying that he doesn't want to blast his wavelength at her too. If I was Patti, I would definitely be very angry, having a guy like Black Star looking down on me. And with that, Patti takes advantages of Black Star having his guard down and take the kill. More like kill at his manhood. How can a Black Star moment be without a kick to the family jewels...or what's left of it. Knowing Patti, she wouldn't hold back, especially a scary, evil smile like that. Liz is very proud of her sister, but feels like it's a waste against the capture of their Meister.
Going off the review for a moment, the growth Black Star has shown since his battle with Mifune. He acts childish in a way, but he can be sentimental and grown up the way he handles things now. His peers, before, they see this strong goof, but Tsubaki only sees the real serious Black Star. Now, with his manly, inspiring speech to the students present in the room, people can see the wounds, the words, the fire in his eyes and what he has gone through to be the best in the world. Achieving everything and anything with his soul and willpower. Also, he is giving some words of hope to Liz, who still feels bad about what happened to Kid.
Third part of the chapter, we see that Stein and Marie return to Shibusen and is facing Shinigami-sama. Of course, they have a moment of "Gomenesai." And as always, Shinigami-sama forgives them. Unlike in the anime where Shinigami-sama follows some kind of contract and decides to hold Crona as a prisoner. They tell Shinigami-sama about their encounter with Justin Law, which their evidence isn't proof enough. However, thanks to Death Scythe and the others, they manage to get evidence that Justin is a traitor of Shibusen. Also, Shinigami-sama got the connection on how Justin escaped Marie and Stein, and the kidnapping of his son.
The fourth part of the chapter is about Justin and his new allies. Noah, Giriko, Justin, the clown (what's left of him) and an unknown character. He suggested himself for the assassination of Maka Albarn. This guy looks like a child. Still, he holds fear, murder and evil deep within his eyes. Soon, we will see him fight with Maka and the new...Death Scythe Soul Eater!
Back to Shibusen, Soul and Maka report in mission accomplish. Death Scythe is happy father and is proud. And Soul and Maka have new outfits. Stein explains Spartoi, and Maka is glad to see him back here. And it looks like Soul is taller now. So much taller. Before he was slightly taller than Maka, but now he is much taller than her and almost as tall as Stein. Also, Maka has grown some, compare to Stein's height. But, it really isn't certain on how much they have grown.
The chapter ends with everyone coming into the Shinigami-sama's room (except Kiddo) and witness Soul becoming Death Scythe.
This months chapter was great. However, I wasn't expecting Soul to become Death Scythe so soon. Many of us predicted Soul and Maka getting their final soul in some epic battle against the new antagonist or when they encounter other big shots. Maybe those souls will be left for Kiddo and Black Star to kill, so they can turn their partners into Death Scythe.
Currently, we have one witch we know of and that is Medusa. The other Gordon sister is unknown and I'm sure they are many other witches out there. So, there are many opportunities for Black Star and Kid to turn their partners into Death Scythes. Joining Soul, who outranks them all. Well, I don't think Soul outranks Kiddo. He is a shinigami after all.
Now, what concerns me is Black Star. Black Star's enemy from chapter two was Mifune. Every major battle he has in the series is always with Mifune. Now...what? Mifune is gone...is their going to be a Black Star centric bad guy just for him and Tsubaki? Will it be the Kishin since he is a Demon God and the closest thing to Shinigami-sama himself?
Kiddo-kun has problems dealing with special characters that his father has encountered during his grim times. Plus, his father's unspeakable past that Kid constantly tries to find what his father is hiding. His curiosity is the reason why Kiddo is trapped in that book. Leading to Patti kicking everybody's ass and kicking Black Star's only future of restoring his Clan.
Maka has problems with Crona and now her head is being hunted down, because of her insane abilities. I only hope that Soul's power up will make not only Maka stronger, but strong enough for Soul to fight and protect her. That's if anything bad happens to her.
Overall, this chapter was great and I can't wait for the next chapter. At the end of this chapter, Soul was about to eat the soul. It would be funny, but sad, if the soul turned out to be like Blair's soul or the clown's soul. And...Maka and Soul has to start over again...failing...again...and in front of their peers...again...
Until next month
