He had soup. He didn't bring food because food on an empty stomach would probably do Sam more harm than good. But soup was nutritious and drinkable. He had made chicken soup with noodles. Noodles shouldn't be too bad with soup. They were bland and unharmful like things. He knocked on Sam's door, holding the bowl of soup.
A minute passed and then he heard a muffled, "Come in."
Alexander pushed open the door and walked in, the pressure that the collar's spell put on him earlier gone. Looking for Sam, he discovered him curled in the corner of the room furthest from the door. He looked terrible. He had a black eye that took up half his face with bruising. His eyes were red from crying and he smelled like he hadn't bathed in days. At least he appeared to have moved to go to the bathroom.
Sam, he could see, was watching him warily as he walked over. He sat down a few feet away from the huddled mass that was Sam and set the soup down, sliding it over to him. Sam looked at it and then at him.
"You haven't eaten in three days Sam. You need to eat."
"Why do you care?" Sam asked sullenly.
"Because Nick cares about you. At least he usually does. Right now he thinks you should starve, though that's because he's mad at you." He paused and added because he believed in being brutally honest, "And because if you're dead, you can't take the collar off."
Sam snorted.
"Well it's true. Though I'm not going to push that right now." He stared up at the ceiling. "I want you to know I'm going against my baser instincts here, those being beating you with in an inch of your life and then torture you until you were so frightened of me that you would do anything I said." Looking back over at Sam he saw that the prince had scrunched up even further into the corner. "But I'm not. I'm going to show you that I can act like a perfectly rational human being."
"You're not human."
"... I was, once, when I was young. Human. My mother, my father, my brother and sister... all human. It was only unlucky circumstances that made me the way I am. I think you should think of it like being a Wallmaker. You're human still, but your still something more. But being a Wallmaker is more than a job for you, and at the same time it is a job. It is the same for me. I am, in my deepest core, human, it's why I look human, and not a cat or a being of energy. I don't have to look this way, but it's my familiar shape." He sighed and looked at Sam.
Sam was looking back at him. "Why are you telling me this?"
"So you can understand me. I don't want to take Nick away from you. But I love him. I love him more than anything I've loved in a long while. He's mine. And you know what? He still wants you. He loves you, probably as much as you love him. He wants to be with you. And because I love him, I'm going to try and make him happy and share him with you. So the question then is, do you want to be with him, because he does want to be with you."
And he held up a finger here, "But we can't do that unless you eat your soup." He did cheat a little here, using his empathy to push Sam into accepting the soup. It was just a little nudge, because he knew that Sam was hungry. But it was enough to make him reach out and start to sip the soup.
Alexander watched him. When the soup was done, he took back the bowl. "You just think about it. You are free to leave if you wish. But I would like you to stay. We both love Nick, very much. Just remember that."
Standing up he gave Sam a slight smile before turning on heel and walking out.
